Horses at Batiqiutos Lagoon =? Clearly can't be legal....

I'm walking back with my dog on the lagoon trail to my car. A guy comes up to me and says, "I can bring me horse here right, the sign doesn't say you can't". I tell him that I've never seen horses there and I'm certain they aren't allowed b/c its nature preserve. He repeats the fact that the sign doesn't say you can't. I tell him it's also a very busy trail with walkers, joggers and dogs...not likely that horses would be allowed to be mixed into that. I'm thinking, "well cars aren't allowed on this trail either and it's not on the sign". He said he would be bringing his horse to the Batiquitos lagoon trail and there's no sign telling him he can't. I give him a final "it's up to you man, but I don't think that's legal and I suspect the ticket/fine is big".

Sooo...if you see the horse guy on the trail tomorrow....I warned you. I wouldn't mind being there if/when he tries it....he's certain he's in the right. lol.

thinking about moving near calavera hills

My family is looking at homes around the Calavera Hills area for the local school district. Does anyone know how crowded the community parks usually get on weekends?

Dog Help

Hi everyone,
I am heartbreakingly forced to rehome Venus, my 47lb spayed Pit/Lab mix. She is incredibly sweet, affectionate, and high-energy, but she has special medical needs I can no longer manage alone.

The Urgency: She has epilepsy and needs meds every 12 hours. Working two jobs alone, I am missing doses, causing her to seize.

The Risk: Local shelters have warned me she faces euthanasia risk due to her condition.

Details: Rescued in 2024. Fully healed from a past chemical/tar burn scar. Super loving with people. Have all paperwork.
She desperately needs an adopter or rescue who can commit to a strict twice-a-day medication schedule. Please message me directly if you can help.

This Weekend in North County…

Let us know what you’re up to this weekend in the comments!

🗓️ Upcoming Events in North County:

Thursday 7/2:

Oceanside Sunset Market | Coast Hwy & Pier View Way, Oceanside | Thurs 5–9pm | Get there before the sun drops. That's when the food vendors are at their best and the lines are shortest. Several blocks of food stalls, local makers, and live music along the water, free to walk, and enough going on to make a real night of it.

Carlsbad Village Books Grand Opening | 640 Grand Ave, Carlsbad | Thurs, opens 10am | Opening day for the Village's new independent bookstore, taking over the longtime O'Sullivan's pub space. New and used books, board games, gifts, and Marla's Coffee inside, open seven days a week now. There's a fuller story on it further down.

In The End (Linkin Park Experience) with Fooz Fighters | Belly Up, 143 S Cedros Ave, Solana Beach | Thurs 8pm | Two tribute acts with one working through the Linkin Park catalog and the other taking on Foo Fighters, with Radio Thieves opening. Loud, fast, and a good warmup for the weekend if you grew up on early-2000s rock.

Open Mic Night at Docent Brewing | Docent Brewing, 3060 State St, Carlsbad | Thurs 5–8pm | Weekly open mic in Carlsbad Village. Musicians, poets, and comics take the little stage while the taproom pours. Free to watch, a mellow way to kick off the long weekend with a beer in hand before the fireworks take over the rest of it.

Friday 7/3:

Oceanside Fireworks & Drone Display | SoCal Sports Complex at El Corazon, 3300 El Corazon Dr, Oceanside | Fri, gates 4pm, show 9pm | The show starts the night before the holiday, a drone display paired with fireworks over the fields. Parks & Rec sets up lawn games and crafts, a DJ starts at 6, and food trucks cover dinner. Free to attend, but parking is $15 on-site, or take the Sprinter to Rancho del Oro and walk in. Bring a blanket.

Dave & Buster's Red, White & Play Fest | Dave & Buster's, Carlsbad | Fri, all day | An all-day, all-inclusive pass with unlimited arcade play, an all-American food spread, live music, and a pretzel dog eating contest. Tickets start at $25 and have to be bought ahead through Fever. They are offering an even better deal on July 4th, $2.50 unlimited game play for anyone who buys before noon (you can’t earn tickets, but a steal if you just want to play games).

Saturday 7/4:

San Diego County Fair Fireworks Spectacular | Del Mar Fairgrounds, 2260 Jimmy Durante Blvd, Del Mar | Sat 9pm | The fair's big send-off on its final weekend. Marine Band San Diego plays the Corona Grandstand at 7:30, then the fireworks cap the night. Admission to the fair covers all of it, so you get the whole fairgrounds all day first.

LEGOLAND Red, White & BOOM! | LEGOLAND California, 1 Legoland Dr, Carlsbad | Sat, park 10am–9pm, fireworks ~8:45pm | The park hands out 3D glasses that make the fireworks finale pop overhead, LEGO bricks and all. DJ dance parties, character meetups, and lawn games fill the day. Covered by regular admission and select passes, so no separate show ticket to buy.

Escondido 61st Annual Independence Day Festival | Grape Day Park, 340 N Escondido Blvd, Escondido | Sat 4:30–9:30pm | Live music on the main stage, an artisan market, a craft beer garden, and face painting and crafts for the kids until 8:30. Fireworks go up from the Center for the Arts lot at 9.

San Marcos Red, White and BOOM! | Bradley Park, 1587 Linda Vista Dr, San Marcos | Sat 5–9:30pm | The whole park turns into a fair for the night, with live music, carnival games, jumpers, and food for sale, and fireworks at 9. Bring blankets and chairs. It's free to get in, but parking fills up fast, so carpool or plan to arrive early.

Vista Independence Day Celebration | Brengle Terrace Park, 1200 Vale Terrace Dr, Vista | Sat, gates 5pm, fireworks 9pm | Head to the Moonlight Amphitheatre for a City Council salute to the country's 250th at 7:15, then singer Cassie B at 7:35, then fireworks after dark.

4th of July BBQ & Firework Spectacular | Park Hyatt Aviara, 7100 Aviara Resort Dr, Carlsbad | Sat 5:30–8:30pm | A big BBQ spread of mesquite meats and seafood, a mac and cheese bar, a separate kids' buffet, and live music from the Chad Rubin Band. Stilt walkers and face painters roam the lawn, and there's a fireworks show over the resort. Ticketed, so book ahead.

4th of July Flyover | Mission Pacific Beach Resort, 201 N Myers St, Oceanside | Sat, 4pm | The San Diego Salute Formation sends vintage Beechcraft T-34 trainers over the Oceanside Pier, opening with a Presentation of the Colors before the planes go up. Free to watch from the sand or the pier. If you want a seat, the Mission Pacific and Seabird have ocean-view patios and a pool deck open through the afternoon.

The Fourth at Fox Point Farms | Fox Point Farms, 1150 Quail Gardens Dr, Encinitas | Sat 12–4pm | The low-key alternative to the fireworks crowds. A daytime lawn party at the farm with food, drinks, live music, and open space to spread out, more a relaxed afternoon than a launch-site scramble. It wraps by late afternoon, so you can still catch an evening show after.

Sunday 7/5:

San Diego County Fair, Closing Day | Del Mar Fairgrounds, 2260 Jimmy Durante Blvd, Del Mar | Sun 11am–11pm | Last chance before it packs up for the year. If you skipped the fireworks, Sunday is your shot at the food, the rides, and the exhibits. Expect holiday-weekend crowds, so go early and wear good shoes.

The Highwayman Show | Belly Up, 143 S Cedros Ave, Solana Beach | Sun | A tribute to the country supergroup, so Cash, Nelson, Jennings, and Kristofferson all in one set. Expect the four-part harmonies, the outlaw catalog, the big hits and a few deeper cuts. If you spent the Fourth chasing fireworks, this is the calm landing, a mellow way to close out a loud weekend.

Best place to watch USA v Bosnia with kids?

We’re in town for the week and would like to find a lively but kid friendly place to watch the match with dinner and a beer. Would love something more outdoors vs. a dark sports bar if possible. Thanks in advance for your recommendations!

Caregivers needed in coastal Carlsbad

My brother and I are seeking 2 caregivers who are compassionate, DEPENDABLE, professional, and fun! My name is Sarah and my brother is Scott and we both have a disability called Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA). We are full-time wheelchair users who lead active, fulfilling lives but need physical assistance to do so.

About Us
I am 39 years old, an artist and graphic designer who enjoys all kinds of creative projects. I like music of all kinds, movies of all kinds except for horror, and I am really into progressive politics. Scott, 35, is an engineer who enjoys technology, and is great at problem-solving. He likes to read, watch mostly sci-fi/fantasy movies, and take his dog Stella all around Carlsbad. He is also a major foodie. We live together with our mom, Lisa, who is our primary caregiver and has been for 39 years, so she is in desperate need of a break.

The household also includes three friendly dogs, so applicants should be comfortable around dogs and willing to help with their daily care, such as feeding, sometimes brushing or bathing, letting them out, and providing general attention as needed.

Schedule
We are currently hiring for two daytime caregiver positions:
Sunday–Wednesday: 11:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.
Thursday–Saturday: 11:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.
Please indicate which schedule you are interested in when applying.

PAY DEPENDS ON EXPERIENCE, ~$30

Responsibilities
Assist with activities of daily living, including personal care, dressing, grooming, and hygiene.
Safely perform transfers using electric ceiling hoist (training provided).
Assist with meal preparation and feeding.
Help with range-of-motion exercises and positioning for comfort.
Perform light housekeeping, including laundry, tidying living spaces, and meal cleanup.
Assist with the care of three household dogs.
Drive us to appointments, errands, social outings, and recreational activities using our wheelchair-accessible van.
Monitor for changes in health or comfort and communicate concerns promptly.
Maintain a safe, respectful, and supportive environment that promotes independence and dignity.

Qualifications
Previous caregiving, CNA, home health, or personal care experience is preferred but not required.
Current enrollment with In Home Support Services (IHSS) or be willing to enroll if offered employment.
Compassionate, patient, dependable, and attentive to detail.
Comfortable learning specialized care techniques.
Comfortable driving a wheelchair-accessible van.
Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
Current influenza and COVID-19 vaccinations are required.
Able to maintain confidentiality and professionalism.
Ability to pass a general background check.

What We’re Looking For
This is more than a caregiving position—it’s an opportunity to become part of a supportive team and help two accomplished adults continue pursuing their careers, hobbies, friendships, and independence. We’re looking for someone who is reliable, adaptable, has a good sense of humor, and enjoys building meaningful, long-term working relationships.
Training will be provided for all care routines, equipment, transfers, and use of the accessible van. Experience with spinal muscular atrophy is not required—we’re happy to train the right person.

If you're interested in applying, please send me a private message through reddit. Thanks!

Carlsbad Teenaged Assholes RJ, David, Jason, Johnny, and Andre are at it again

Well, thank god for dash cams. I don't care that these are minors. They want to do whatever they want? Face the consequences of being posted and shamed online. I hope the parents of these entitled asshole kids are embarrassed to have raised them.

Not only are these little dipshit terrors on e-bikes ignoring driving laws, but being complete assholes in the process. Ignoring stop signs, flicking people off, yelling profanities, throwing cones, but today was a new level of disrespect...

I was driving on Garfield Street minding my own business, and as I passed this gang of 6 kids on e-bikes, the blond short kid you see turn his head spat on my windshield (I've noted which one he is in red outline in screengrabs at the end of the video), and his friend was recording it behind him. If they are doing this kind of behavior, what else are they doing? Vandalizing? Stealing things? We won't be sorry when they end up in jail or 6 feet under.

Barons sucks and I miss Smart and Final

Bougie, expensive, pretentious. Parking is worse than Trader Joes. But most of all the layout is obviously designed to inconvenience you and make sure it takes as long as possible to find what you’re looking for. Its impossible for more than one cart to get in or out of the the 23 degree angle intersections and the end caps make it clear that they’ve figured out they get a sales bump on purchases while you’re slowed down or stopped. I’m so sick of being milked for every second and every cent. I guess it’s more delivery for me. /rant

C4FA files third airport lawsuit; PAAC outlines VNAP recommendations

A third lawsuit has been filed over operations at McClellan-Palomar Airport, continuing a long-running dispute between some residents, local officials and San Diego County.

The suit was filed by Citizens for a Friendly Airport (C4FA), which argues the county’s new lease with American Airlines violates a longstanding conditional use permit that they say requires voter approval for expansions. The group also raises broader concerns about who has decision-making authority over the airport. The current lawsuit, which combines the original lawsuits against the county and American and United, will be heard in court on Aug. 14.

At the same time, other perspectives presented to the Carlsbad City Council emphasized the legal and regulatory structure already in place, including federal oversight by the FAA and the voluntary nature of local noise programs. A public records request shows the city has spent more than $700,000 on the airport issues over the past several years.

A presentation by the Palomar Airport Advisory Committee centered on airport noise measurement standards, operational challenges with the region’s toll road-adjacent airspace, and recommendations to update outdated noise compatibility studies and monitoring systems.

The issue remains complex, involving overlapping jurisdictions between federal, county and local authorities, along with competing interpretations of how airport impacts should be measured and managed.

Full breakdown of the lawsuit, policy issues and community response here: https://ncpipeline.substack.com/p/c4fa-files-third-airport-lawsuit

CUSD vs SDUHSD

The general consensus seems to be “SDUHSD is better,” but can someone explain why? Looking at the stats for Carlsbad HS vs La Costa Canyon, or Sage Creek vs San Dieguito, it’s not clear to me why the latter two are considered better. (I understand that CCA pulls SDUHSD upwards, but are folks in Carlsbad really sending their kids down there?)

Edit for more context: we’re currently looking to buy in south Carlsbad and are aware that some areas go to CUSD, some to SDUHSD, and some to San Marcos. There appears to be a premium for areas that pull to SDUHSD, and a discount for SMUSD, and I’d like to understand why. In reality we’re many years off from needing to care — oldest is 2, so if anything we slightly prefer CUSD for the free public TK — and many things may change in the next 12 years (heck, from current trajectories maybe SMUSD will be the best!), but I’d love to hear people’s thoughts on the matter.
