Shortly after John Hurt was introduced in The Name of the Doctor as "The Doctor" I saw a video of a few kids that had just watched the episode. The poor buggers cried their eyes out, because they seriously thought their beloved Matt Smith would soon regenerate into that sad-faced old grandpa. They absolutely HATED his guts!

To be fair: We all were puzzled over this reveal back in the day. But there were more than enough clues that this couldn't possibly be a future incarnation of the Doctor. As if the BBC could afford John Hurt for a full run as the Doctor!!!

Now and then there were moments people hated on changes in the show that never happened, due to a lack of context, lines they'd missed or jokes by the showrunners that had been taken WAY too serious. What do you remember?

Rules are simple: You make a statement concerning Doctor Who and the others have to guess what's wrong with it! Example:

The Fourth Doctor had a robot dog once named K-9. He called him his best friend!

"Um, actually: He called K-9 his SECOND best friend!"

A friend of mine recently organized a Science Fiction pub quiz and asked me for some questions, especially about Doctor Who. I gave him a challenge instead, to make the guests correctly say "Raxacoricofallapatorius". I struggled with that a whole year, back in the day!

Do you have any good ideas for Pub quiz questions or challenges concerning Doctor Who?

What we saw in the episode can't be the first run-through! There is plenty of evidence that suggests otherwise, like the already old painting of Clara, the skulls at the bottom of the sea and the word "BIRD" written in the sand. Let alone what the Doctor says about the stars not making sense.

There had to be a first run-through that happened long LONG ago, before the episode even started. And here's where things get interesting, cause for example: After the Doctor jumped into the water, we saw him change into dry clothes that where already waiting for him at the fireplace. And that he replaces with his own wet clothes. We later learn they have always been HIS clothes!

The Problem is: There couldn't have been dry clothes the first time around, when you think about it. Which means the Doctor must've been running around naked at some point!

The clothes can't just be placed by the Confession Dial or the Timelords either! Why would they place the dry clothes at the same place he would later use to dry his wet ones, instead of placing them somewhere else? And we know they're not items that get simply reset. Cause that would otherwise happen every time!

The things that DON'T get reset are all things the Doctor either brought with him or placed, like the painting, the stone plate he buried or the chalk drawings. But wait: That means the Doctor was wearing the same, never reset clothes for Billions of years! What kind of fabric where they made of?!!

The producers of the show have a big problem: They struggle to attract new audience members AND keep longtime fans invested. They attempted one soft reboot after another and always stumble over a ton of lore that can't simply be brushed off, for the sake of keeping everything fresh and exciting.

Sure, we have our beloved companions who serve as audience surrogates! Who give us their own fresh perspective, with a more updated social background everytime. But in the end there's always the Doctor! That not-so-mysterious-anymore Timelord from Gallifrey (or not) who has dealt with Daleks, Cybermen, Weeping Angels etc many MANY times before. They have a shared history and emotional baggage. One could leave them out, of course, but then again: Chibnall tried that with Series 11 and fans were not thrilled!

However, there might be a solution! Not the most original one! An ancient trope! Incredibly cringe! And yet, under this very specific circumstances, a possible solution to make everyone happy... (ish!) Just imagine: For one or maybe even two seasons the Doctor suffers from amnesia and, for once, is nearly at the same page as their companion. He has no idea who these Daleks are and what makes them so dangerous. Or if he can trust this guy who calls himself The Master and claims to be his best friend. The suspense would climb up the roof! New audience members would have full accessibility and the fans would not have to go without their precious lore... it just plays into the narrative in other ways.

What do you think? Is this a possible solution? Or is it one of the worst ideas you've ever heard?
