Help me choose a resort: adults only, social/lively vibe with luxury feel, but NOT spring break raunchy

Long-winded post ahead!

Hi everyone! I've been researching resorts for days, and I feel like I'm going in circles. I'd love some feedback from people who have actually stayed at these resorts. I'm probably chasing a unicorn, but I figured I'd ask the experts!

My husband and I are looking for an adults-only, all-inclusive resort that strikes the right balance between luxury, romance, and a fun social atmosphere. We don't need a nonstop party, but we also don't want a resort that's so quiet everyone disappears to their rooms after dinner. Our thinking is that it's easier to find quiet moments at a lively resort than it is to create a fun atmosphere at a resort that's naturally very tranquil.

Trip Details

  • Destination: Cancun/Riviera Maya, Mexico or Punta Cana, Dominican Republic
  • Length: 5 nights
  • Time of year: Late April or early May
  • Budget: Ideally under $3,500 total for two (hotel only)

We don't plan to leave the resort except maybe for a boating excursion, so the resort itself is the vacation.

What we're NOT looking for

  • Spring break or vegas party vibes
  • A super quiet "honeymoon-only" atmosphere
  • A resort that's showing its age or feels run down

What we ARE looking for

  • A lively pool with music, a swim-up bar, and daytime entertainment
  • Guests actually socializing instead of everyone keeping to themselves
  • Fun energy without feeling like a raunchy nightclub
  • Clean pretty rooms
  • Good service
  • Good food (we're not foodies, just looking for consistently good meals)
  • Well-maintained pools and grounds

I'm more of a beach person, while my husband is more of a pool person. A nice beach is definitely important to me, but if I have to compromise, I'd rather have a great pool atmosphere than the absolute perfect beach. We'd also like the best chance of avoiding heavy seaweed, although I know that's impossible to predict.

Resorts I've been considering

  • Breathless Punta Cana – We stayed here for our honeymoon in 2019 and really enjoyed it. It had a fun atmosphere without feeling over the top, although I know occupancy was unusually low that year d/t bad DR press.
  • Excellence Playa Mujeres – Looks beautiful, but I'm worried it may be a little too quiet.
  • Breathless Riviera Cancun – Love the energy on paper, but I've seen mixed reviews mentioning it's becoming run down and can attract more of a spring break crowd. Also heard beach and seawood was major problem.
  • Valentin Imperial Riviera Maya – I know it has a huge following, but from the photos it seems a little dated and not quite the vibe I'm looking for.
  • Secrets Moxché – Looks incredible, but it's probably outside our budget.

So...am I chasing a unicorn? 😅

If you've stayed at any of these, which one do you think best balances luxury, a fun social atmosphere, good food, and a nice beach? I'd also love any other resort recommendations that fit what we're looking for!
