r/AllInclusiveResorts

Help me choose a resort: adults only, social/lively vibe with luxury feel, but NOT spring break raunchy

Long-winded post ahead!

Hi everyone! I've been researching resorts for days, and I feel like I'm going in circles. I'd love some feedback from people who have actually stayed at these resorts. I'm probably chasing a unicorn, but I figured I'd ask the experts!

My husband and I are looking for an adults-only, all-inclusive resort that strikes the right balance between luxury, romance, and a fun social atmosphere. We don't need a nonstop party, but we also don't want a resort that's so quiet everyone disappears to their rooms after dinner. Our thinking is that it's easier to find quiet moments at a lively resort than it is to create a fun atmosphere at a resort that's naturally very tranquil.

Trip Details

  • Destination: Cancun/Riviera Maya, Mexico or Punta Cana, Dominican Republic
  • Length: 5 nights
  • Time of year: Late April or early May
  • Budget: Ideally under $3,500 total for two (hotel only)

We don't plan to leave the resort except maybe for a boating excursion, so the resort itself is the vacation.

What we're NOT looking for

  • Spring break or vegas party vibes
  • A super quiet "honeymoon-only" atmosphere
  • A resort that's showing its age or feels run down

What we ARE looking for

  • A lively pool with music, a swim-up bar, and daytime entertainment
  • Guests actually socializing instead of everyone keeping to themselves
  • Fun energy without feeling like a raunchy nightclub
  • Clean pretty rooms
  • Good service
  • Good food (we're not foodies, just looking for consistently good meals)
  • Well-maintained pools and grounds

I'm more of a beach person, while my husband is more of a pool person. A nice beach is definitely important to me, but if I have to compromise, I'd rather have a great pool atmosphere than the absolute perfect beach. We'd also like the best chance of avoiding heavy seaweed, although I know that's impossible to predict.

Resorts I've been considering

  • Breathless Punta Cana – We stayed here for our honeymoon in 2019 and really enjoyed it. It had a fun atmosphere without feeling over the top, although I know occupancy was unusually low that year d/t bad DR press.
  • Excellence Playa Mujeres – Looks beautiful, but I'm worried it may be a little too quiet.
  • Breathless Riviera Cancun – Love the energy on paper, but I've seen mixed reviews mentioning it's becoming run down and can attract more of a spring break crowd. Also heard beach and seawood was major problem.
  • Valentin Imperial Riviera Maya – I know it has a huge following, but from the photos it seems a little dated and not quite the vibe I'm looking for.
  • Secrets Moxché – Looks incredible, but it's probably outside our budget.

So...am I chasing a unicorn? 😅

If you've stayed at any of these, which one do you think best balances luxury, a fun social atmosphere, good food, and a nice beach? I'd also love any other resort recommendations that fit what we're looking for!

Couples Tower Isle Horror Story

The Hotel forced me to use their doctor due to dehydration because they “couldn’t be responsible for other doctors”. They gave me IV fluids that they said would cost around $250 then they billed me $1500!!?? Then I got a bad Infection from it because they got the needle dirty and it spider webbed toward my heart from the injection location.
I had to cancel my excursions due to horrible diarrhea cause by the medications and the hotel wouldn’t refund it even though it was THEIR doctor who did this to me.
I couldn’t drink on the antibiotics so that was great when you’re on VACATION…
Then the hotel made me pay even more to see another doctor when THEY gave me the infection.. They did NOTHING to help the situation or be “responsible“ for their own doctor like they said they would be. They have NO integrity.
They didn’t refund anything or offer anything. It costed me $2000 more dollars when all was said and done.
Yes, I paid $2000 to be given an infection and have my vacation absolutely ruined by this hotel..
The scuba diving staff saw me seeing the nurse and arbitrarily cancelled my scuba diving when that was THE WHOLE REASON we chose this place, because it was included.. We had a medical release and they still cancelled it..
Besides that.. Ugh, where do I begin?
The freaking hot tubs didn’t work.
One was empty and broken and the other had no heat and dirty cigarette butts in it…🤮
No music at the beach or pools during the day and barely any music at night..
Terrible WiFi, don’t even try using it.
Bad AC and the room had hair all over it and smelled like foot fungus and sewage.
Not kidding, the staff are the rudest people I have ever dealt with at a resort. They legitimately treat you with disdain, ignore you and are just all around rude.
Staff was constantly trying to hustle me with side deals and trying to see how much money they could con me out of.
STAFF, not random people.
Staff refused to give us the food we wanted repeatedly. I ask for two beef patty’s, they give me one beef, one chicken even though they have more beef and when I ask for beef, they act like I’m the one causing a problem. Order more freaking beef pattys geniuses.
I ask room service for Sprite with breakfast and it came separately, 2 hours after the breakfast it was ordered with. Lol.
Plastic water bottles that have to be filled with tap water because they don’t have bottled water for guests? Wth?
I asked guest services for one of their “complementary” water bottles and they never sent me one..
Ask for water when dining and wait 20 minutes to get a glass filled.
Ask for a cup and wait so long you end up getting one yourself.

The place is just a travesty. Nothing about it is good. The only thing good were the things NOT at the hotel.. Stay anywhere else, this place and the people who run it and work there are a total joke.

How I Canceled My Legendary Club Vacation Membership in Mexico Under Article 56 and Received a Full Refund (Letter Template Included)

When I was trying to figure out how to cancel my vacation club membership, I couldn't find much from someone who had actually gone through the process from start to finish. I spent hours researching what to do, so I wanted to share exactly what worked for me in case it helps someone else.

My understanding is that Article 56 of Mexico's Federal Consumer Protection Law applies to vacation club or membership purchases made in Mexico, regardless of which resort sold the membership.

I'm not a lawyer, and this isn't legal advice. I'm simply sharing what happened in my case and the steps I took.

My Situation

I purchased a Legendary Vacation Club membership while staying at AVA Resort in Cancun.

After I got back to my room, I had second thoughts. I sat down, read through all of my paperwork again, and decided the membership just wasn't for me.

While researching my options, I came across Article 56 of Mexico's Federal Consumer Protection Law. My contract didn't mention this cancellation right, but based on my research, I understood that I had five business days to cancel, so I acted immediately.

One piece of advice I'd give anyone in this situation is to document absolutely everything. Keep copies of every email, every letter, every document, and every conversation. Create a paper trail from the very beginning. If there's ever a dispute, you'll want hard proof of every step you took before the five-business-day cancellation period expired. That's why I emailed my letter, hand-delivered a printed copy, recorded myself delivering it, had a second signed copy ready to send by FedEx if it became necessary while I was still in Mexico, and later asked for written confirmation of the refund.

Here's exactly what I did.

Step 1

I wrote a cancellation letter referencing Article 56.

In the letter I requested:

  • Cancellation of my membership
  • A full refund
  • No future charges
  • Written confirmation that everything had been canceled

Step 2

I immediately emailed the letter.

I CC'd:

  • The Legendary Vacation Club membership email
  • My membership representative
  • The resort's email address
  • extranjeros@profeco.gob.mx (PROFECO's office that assists foreign consumers)

I wasn't filing a complaint with PROFECO at that point. I simply wanted them copied on my cancellation notice so there was a record that I had exercised what I understood to be my cancellation rights within the five-business-day period and show the resort I had educated myself.

Step 3

Immediately after sending the email, I walked to the membership office and personally handed them a printed copy.

I also recorded myself handing the letter to one of their employees.

The reason I did that wasn't because I expected a problem. I wanted to create a clear paper trail showing that I had delivered my written cancellation notice within the five-business-day cancellation period. I didn't want to rely solely on email because they could later claim they never received it, and I didn't want it to become my word against theirs about whether I delivered the letter on time.

If I ever needed to dispute the charge with my credit card company, I wanted clear documentation showing that I had notified the resort within the legal cancellation period.

Step 4

I also had a second signed copy ready to send by FedEx if it became necessary while I was still in Mexico.

Fortunately, I never had to use it.

When physically handing them the letter, they started reading my letter and the very first thing they said was:
"I have to ask...who wrote this?"

I smiled and simply replied,
"I did."

Honestly, I expected a lot more resistance.

There really wasn't any.

They asked me a couple of times why I wanted to cancel.

Every time I gave them the exact same answer.
"I decided it wasn't for me."

That was it.
I didn't argue.
I didn't complain.
I just stayed polite and firm.

They agreed to cancel my membership and refund my money.

The only issue was that they couldn't actually process the refund until the following day.

I wasn't comfortable leaving with only a verbal promise.

Before I left, I asked them to put the agreement in writing.

They printed a document showing:

  • My name
  • The date
  • The date they will be issuing refund
  • The exact refund amount

The reason I asked for that document was because I wanted proof that the resort had agreed to issue the refund. If something changed overnight and they later refused to process it, I wanted documentation I could provide to my credit card company showing they had already agreed to the refund.

Thankfully, I never needed it.

I returned the following day, signed the cancellation paperwork, and they processed the refund.

The refund was back on my credit card just two days later. I was honestly surprised it happened that quickly.

At no point did I have to file a dispute with my credit card company or file a formal complaint with PROFECO. Everything was resolved directly with the resort.

The Exact Letter I Used (Personal Information Removed)

I've removed all of my personal information and included the exact letter I used below.

Feel free to use it as a template if you're in the same situation. Just replace everything in brackets with your own information. Having an example would have saved me a lot of time and stress, so hopefully it does the same for someone else. The template below is based directly on the letter I used.

[DATE]

To: [MEMBERSHIP COMANY NAME]

I, [YOUR NAME], hereby provide formal written notice that I am exercising my right to cancel and revoke my Legendary Vacation Club Membership Agreement.

This notice is submitted pursuant to Article 56 of the Ley Federal de Protección al Consumidor (Federal Consumer Protection Law) and is being provided within the applicable five-business-day cancellation period.

My membership information is as follows:

Effective immediately, I revoke any authorization for [MEMBERSHIP COMPANY NAME] and/or any affiliated entity to process any future charges related to this Membership.

Please also provide written confirmation that my Membership Agreement has been canceled, that my request for a full refund is being processed, that no further charges will be made, and that this notice has been forwarded to the appropriate department for handling.

You may respond to me at:

Email: [YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS]

Thank you for your prompt attention to this matter.

Sincerely,
[YOUR NAME]

One last thing... don't just copy and paste my letter without reading it. Replace all of the information with your own and make sure it fits your situation. I'm only sharing the letter that I personally used.

I realize every situation is different, and I can't promise anyone else will have the same outcome. I'm simply sharing what happened in my case in hopes that it helps someone else.

If you're reading this and you're still within the five-business-day cancellation period, don't wait. You can always do more research later, but you can't get those five days back.

All Inclusive for Girls Trip (40th Birthday)

I am trying to find an all inclusive for a girls trip. We want to celebrate once we all turn 40. We just want a chill resort where we can all be together.

I’ve done multiple Sandals and a Beaches and love them. However, those don’t fit what we are going for. We want adults only, but not as romantic as a Sandals.

Also, we have 5 people. So we need one room that will hold more than two.

Other things we want is beautiful clear water.

Thanks for your help!

Tipping at AIs (non-US guests)

Hello all, know it’s going to cause a lot of friction, but I’d like feedback from European visitors to AIs, specifically Excellence Coral. Was the expectation to tip overbearing? I’ve got no intention of worrying about leaving my room checking that I’ve got money to sit by the pool. But do staff totally ignore those that don’t tip? I’m happy not having in your face over bearing service if it means I have to wait a few more minutes for a drink. And what about meals? Do servers genuinely expect a tip?

As I said, non-US perspectives appreciated, I know the imported US tip culture dominates based on the clientele of the resort, but hoping to avoid it. It’s a ridiculous system and I’ve got no intention of partaking in it if I can avoid it.

Couple looking for Jan 2027 3k budget

This would be our first time going to an all inclusive and have no idea where to start. We were looking at Mexico or maybe DR but really open to anywhere. Hoping to do 5-7 days and would be flying from ORD. 3k budget with flights included, willing to go a little above if a really good deal.
We are really looking just to relax and hangout and maybe get a massage. Excursions aren’t really a priority. Any and all advice would be helpful!

Smaller All Inclusive

Hello! Wife and I looking to travel mid-November to our first AI. We have stayed at small/boutique hotels in Tulum and Cancun and really like the slower paced feel. However, we always pay a premium in drinks and food by the end.

Can anyone recommend a solid AI in the Caribbean for around 1k or less per night? Something that is laid back and quiet with a solid beach.

Do you ever get ignored at the buffet/restaurant service?

Ive been to a few resorts in Mexico with my wife who is Mexican. I am a gringo and only know a little Spanish. I've noticed when my wife is not around that I get ignored. Has this happened to anyone else? I am wondering if it's because they don't know English so get scared. I can make it work out no matter the language we use. I'm just a little saddened.

The only time the servers end up coming around is when they see I'm about to finish to try and swipe the tip.

What do you guys do in these situations? Do you tip regardless?

The Caves Negril or Secrets Akumal?

For those of you that have been to either resort which do you recommend? We are open to other adults only all inclusive but these two seem to stick out to me. Most likely traveling in September or October.

Has anyone booked flight and hotel directly through Iberostar (Lindo/Maya site) before? Is this legit?

Hi everyone 👋

I’m planning my first big family vacation and I’m hoping someone here can share their experience.

I’m looking at booking an all-inclusive package (flight + hotel) directly through the Iberostar site for the Iberostar Selection Paraíso Lindo/Maya area in Riviera Maya. When I go through the official Iberostar website, it redirects me to a third-party booking page to complete the reservation.

This is the link it sends me to: https://res.onlinetravel.ae/book/checkout

Since this is my first time planning a trip like this for my family (2 adults and 2 kids, ages 6 and 7), I just want to make sure I’m not accidentally booking through a fake or unsafe site.

Has anyone here ever:

  • booked flight & accommodation through Iberostar’s official site and been redirected like this?
  • used this booking engine before?
  • had any issues (or good experiences) with it?

I’m trying to be careful because it’s a pretty big purchase for us, and I really want everything to go smoothly.

Any advice would really help 🙏 Thank you in advance!

Family resort for family with toddler

Hey all,

I have been monitoring this sub a while to look for suggestions but it gets a bit overwhelming. A lot of positives, negatives it's hard to find a good spot.

We're from Alberta Canada. It will be 2 parents and our 4 year old. We're looking for somewhere with direct flights so for now it's looking like Mexico.

For hotel we are hoping for 3500-4000 for 7-8 nights, ideally 8 as the first and last day are a write off with travel.

It's more for the kid to have a good holiday, obviously we want to have fun too but I want to take somewhere he can have a kids pool, and things to keep him busy and have a great week.

I've noticed some places only let you boom a restaurant a couple times for the week, I'm assuming you eat at the buffet other times? If like somewhere we can eat at a restaurant all/most nights. We are looking mid November to first week or two of December.

Any suggestions on where to go to, or avoid are greatly appreciated.

Zel Punta Cana honest review, am I being too harsh with 3/5?

Just stayed at Zel Punta Cana with my girlfriend and honestly I do not understand how this place has so many 5 star reviews. I am not trying to be rude or just complain, because there were good things about it, but I think 3 out of 5 is fair.
The good stuff first. The resort is very clean, safe, and relaxing. Check in was smooth, staff were nice when we arrived, our suitcase was brought to the room, and the room was clean. Housekeeping came every day, towels were changed, water was restocked, and the room had good AC and fans. The pools were really nice, the beach was clean, and the property was well maintained. No garbage, no seaweed, no animals around, and the resort felt secure.
The beach itself was not bad. The chairs were comfortable and the shuttle to the beach was easy. It takes maybe 2 minutes by shuttle or around 10 minutes to walk, so I do not think the walk is a big deal. But I wish the beach was actually connected to the resort. There were also not enough umbrellas or shade, and the vendors came up constantly trying to sell things, even when we were trying to relax or sleep.
The biggest disappointment was the food. The buffet selection was limited and the food was very hit or miss. Some fish was overcooked, the shrimp was not properly cleaned, and seeing a big vein in shrimp while eating is really off putting. We also found what looked like a worm in one of our breakfast meals, and my girlfriend got sick for a couple days. I cannot say for sure what caused it, but after that I was definitely more cautious with the food.
The restaurants were mixed. Teppanyaki was actually pretty good. The Mexican restaurant was decent too. I got the fish filet and it tasted fresh with a good marinade. But the appetizer that was supposed to be flavoured goat cheese did not really taste like goat cheese, and they gave only 3 small pieces of bread with a lot of cheese. The steakhouse was disappointing. The filet was chewy, sides were limited, and the cheesecake was warm. The drinks there were good, but the food felt mid for a steakhouse.
The drinks overall were inconsistent. A lot of drinks had way too much alcohol, to the point where you could not enjoy them. Most piña coladas came from a slushie machine instead of being made fresh. If I ask for a fresh piña colada, I expect it to be made fresh, not poured from a machine and filled with rum. I also ordered a mojito and saw mint leaves that looked almost black, which was not appealing.
There are also not enough bars around the resort. If you are at the far end of the pool, you have to walk all the way back to the main bar just to get a drink. For an all inclusive resort, I found that annoying. Voltaje bar was also very small inside, especially for a resort that already feels quiet at night.
Nighttime entertainment was basically nonexistent. We saw dancers for maybe 5 minutes and live music for maybe 10 minutes. That was pretty much it. I know now that I booked more of a relaxation style resort, so that part is partly on me, but the place felt dead at night. It seemed like people were going to other resorts for entertainment.
The spa pricing was also crazy in my opinion. We were quoted around 400 USD for an 80 minute couples deep tissue massage, and that was with 10 percent off. I understand resort spas are more expensive, but that felt unrealistic. The guy also told us to book with him so he could get commission, which made it feel more like a sales pitch.
The room was clean, but our sheets did not seem to be changed once. I marked the sheets to check and the mark stayed there. I was tipping housekeeping 5 USD a day, so that bothered me.
The language barrier was hard sometimes too. I know we are in a Spanish speaking country, but this is an international resort, and simple things like asking for a fresh drink or confirming transportation should be easier.
The departure transfer process was frustrating. We were told Nexus does not come to Zel, then sent near the pool, then back to the lobby, then told to go to another resort. I ended up calling Nexus myself using one of the worker’s phones, and Nexus confirmed they do come directly to Zel and told me not to worry about what the resort staff said.
Overall, I do not think Zel is a bad resort. It is clean, safe, calm, and relaxing. If you want to do almost nothing for a week, you might really like it. But for around 4000 CAD for two people, I expected better food, better drinks, more bars, better entertainment, better spa value, and a smoother departure process.
I also saw The Reserve at Paradisus Palma Real nearby and honestly it looked like it had a way better atmosphere and setup. Maybe I booked the wrong type of resort, and that part is my fault, but I still do not think Zel is a 5 star experience.
For me, 3 out of 5 is fair. Clean, safe, and relaxing, but too quiet and underwhelming for the price. Am I being too harsh, or did anyone else feel the same?

Cancun AI Resorts (Adults Only)

I often see people asking for resort recommendations. Here are mine.

If you want to avoid sargassum, Playa Mujeres, north of Cancun, has limited to no sargassum. The best resorts here are Atelier and Excellence. I heard Beloved is good too but I have only been to the first two mentioned.

Atelier Playa Mujeres
Atelier has the best beach service I’ve ever experienced. The attendants make sure you have the best beach chairs and set you up with plenty of towels. At other resorts this type of treatment is reserved when you purchase a membership. Not at Atelier. The food here is the best I’ve had. The only thing I would change is having a larger property and central square with a band. The golf course takes up a lot of real estate at this resort. You don’t do much walking. This might be a bonus if you want to hide from the sun and go from your room to the pool with an umbrella with limited exposure to sun. The other perk of Atelier is the sky bar. It is amazing to be on a rooftop bar and overlooking the ocean. They also hire a telescope handler with a large telescope for stargazing. When we went summer 2025 there was a moon rising that evening. I couldn’t believe what I observed in the horizon and then it was elevated with the telescope. Atelier age range is 20s to 50s. I’m a millennial and used to an older crowd. Atelier at times had a party vibe based on some younger guests. For the most part, the guests were great and we met some great couples. At check in, be careful of the concierge assigned to you. They will try to sell you their membership. Continue to say no. Unless you are interested.

Excellence Playa Mujeres
This property is beautiful. Lots of day and evening activities. True luxury experience. It has à la carte breakfast and lunch restaurants with delicious options. Most importantly, it has a central square with a live band. The vocalists and musicians are exceptional. We often enjoyed the band before or after dinner. It was great to listen to good music, dance, and of course people watch. We also loved the pickleball tournament. We had not played previously played, but that didn’t matter. We did fairly well because of tennis experience. The bike tour in the morning was amazing. I don’t want to spoil any of it, but I promise you will enjoy it. Make sure you bring bug spray. This is the only time we experienced mosquitoes, because we left the property briefly. The restaurants here are amazing and we loved our room. We chose the most basic room which was luxurious. The airport transfer with a luxury SUV was included.

Valentin Imperial Riveria Maya
This is the most important resort to us. It is massive and you will love the walking. For dinner you can call a golf cart to drive you to restaurant. I enjoyed the beautiful walk home with what seemed like a fairy forest with the twinkling lights adorned on the path home to our room. Our room was Emerald. It’s ocean front and worth every cent. You can find deals sometimes for the Emerald room. The food here is amazing and the entertainment is exceptional. The fire show is the best I’ve seen. The staff are so nice and welcoming. This resort has a central square with a band that includes vocalists and musicians. It was nice listening to the band before and after dinner.

Lastly, please bring tips to thank the staff. You can order Pesos with your bank in small currency denominations. I usually factor in shuttle driver there and back, bellboy, maid for room, restaurants and staff that went above and beyond during activities or beach/pool service. I used to work in restaurants, so I’m partial to tipping. Totally understand that not everyone is like me.

Adults only with a good pool vibe

Looking for recommendations for our 10 year anniversary. Would like a good pool vibe and lively atmosphere but not spring break crazy. Would like to enjoy a bar or something to do in the evening.
Looked at excellence coral playa mujeres and that seems like a great option for us but the reviews seem to say it is VERY quiet and relaxed. Worried we might get a little bored.

Have heard a lot of good things about Atelier. aesthetically and overall seems like our vibe but don’t know if I love how gigantic the resort is.

Does anyone have recommendations for something that seems to fit?

Deciding between resorts for honeymoon

Hello, I’m trying to decide between 4 budget friendly options for our honeymoon next year in January.

I feel like my head is exploding looking at all of them. At the end of the day neither of us are super picky, we just want a week where we don’t have to think about anything or plan and just totally relax, but we don’t want to spend a lot of money and we realize that means making some sacrifices on food etc. We aren’t expecting incredible amazing rooms and gourmet food from any of these.

I would like to hear from anyone who’s been to these places if they had any major cleanliness or travel(shuttle) issues etc, or if they’re so overcrowded that it’s hard to enjoy it.

Narrowed it down to:
Ocean Maya Royale
Ocean Coral & Turquesa
Ocean Riviera Paradise
Occidental at Xcaret

I’m leaning towards occidental because I find the grounds to be very beautiful in the pictures, and it’s the least expensive. Since I’m not really expecting luxury quality from any of them I’d like to save money if there’s not major problems. Maya royale being a close second because it’s adults only.

Thanks!

Edit to add budget info: up to $4000 CAD for two of us including flights. Right now all slightly under budget, with Occidental being up to $1000 less than the others.

Atelier vs. Valentin Imperial? 🏝️

Which would you book? We visited EPM last year and loved it, looking to go back and have a similar experience, but different resort with new things to see/look at.

I know food wise Atelier takes the crown, but we didn’t hate EPM food so not that picky on that.

Also, side note — I typically use Expedia to book my trips as I bundle & save — does anyone have any better recommendations? I find this is the usually cheapest. TIA!
