Summoning the Collective Power of this Subreddit
Hi everyone! :) I'm attempting to help my mom reacquire her citizenship (lost during emigration to Canada in 1975). Many thanks in advance for taking the time to share any suggestions or advice!
Quick Summary of My Mom's Situation:
- Born to Italian parents in Italy in 1965. They immigrated to Canada in 1975 and thus forfeited their citizenship. Now eligible for reacquisition (yay!)
- Looking for your help to understand how we might expedite the process of obtaining:
- Applicant's (i.e. my mom's) Canadian naturalization (citizenship) certificate
- Parents's (i.e. my mom's parents, both deceased) Canadian naturalization (citizenship) certificate or proof (I understand an ATIP request would be much quicker, but would it suffice in place of an official certificate?)
- Current wait times (~18 months) for Canadian naturalization certificate documentation surpass the reacquisition for citizenship application deadline (December 31, 2027).
Thanks so much,
Chiara
P.S. Little addendum: It's been a tough period for my family (within a week, we lost my mom's mom and another family member in unexpected/tragic circumstances) and I promised my mom that I would do everything possible to help her obtain her citizenship. It might sound silly, but it's become even more important to her as her family has dwindled. All to say, I'm open to any outlandish ideas (e.g. contacting my MP to expedite processing, social media advocacy, etc.) you might have about making this possible! Thank you again.
