First Ultra — Am I about to screw up my fueling plan?

I’m running my first 50K soon and wanted to get some feedback on my fueling/hydration plan from people with more ultra experience.

Here’s what I’m currently planning:

Fuel

  • SiS Beta Fuel gel (40g carbs) about every 40 minutes
  • I’ve tested these on my long runs and they’ve sat really well with my stomach
  • I’ll also carry GU gels and use them as needed if I feel like I need some extra fuel or want something different
  • Goal is to start fueling early and stay consistent instead of waiting until I feel low

Hydration

  • Roughly 500–750 mL of fluid per hour, adjusting based on heat/thirst
  • NUUN for electrolytes
  • Sip consistently throughout the race rather than drinking a ton at once
  • I’ll also take advantage of aid stations to refill as needed

My biggest goal is just to finish the 50K and avoid blowing up from under-fueling or dehydration.

For those of you who have run 50Ks: Does this seem like a reasonable plan? Anything you’d change, especially with the timing of the gels/electrolytes?

Also curious how you decide when you actually need extra fuel like a GU versus just sticking to your normal fueling schedule.
