Writer-actors asking for support in our debut Fringe run

Hey folks,

My cowriter and I have spent four years writing our first play and we are freaking out because WE ARE GOING TO THE FRINGE! It's our debut piece and also our first time showing at the Fringe, so there's a lot on the line for us.

As everyone here is 'in the trade', I don't need to explain to you how exorbitant it is to try and make a show happen, least of all at the Fringe. We’re running a Crowdfunder and as we didn’t want to just go all around the houses asking people to open their wallets, — especially fellow actors — we’re working on a ‘rewards’ model, in the hopes people can get something back for anything they put in. Everything on offer has been kindly donated by people we’ve met during our time working in the industry.

Here are some of the rewards on offer that we thought might be of interest:

  • Bespoke Comedy Showreel Scenes: BBC Comedy writer and award-winning comedian Tal Davies will write three completely custom short comedy scenes tailored precisely to your specific casting type, strengths, and talents.
  • Shakespeare Speech Coaching: International acting coach Lise Olson (40+ years experience training actors for the West End and top drama schools) is doing 40-minute 1-2-1 Zoom sessions to sharpen a classical monologue.
  • Musical Theatre Performer/Director Coaching: A 1-hour private Zoom coaching session with acclaimed director Stephen Whitson, former Associate Director for the UK-production of Hamilton.
  • Theatre Fundraising 1-2-1 Session: A 1-hour deep-dive Zoom with award-winning producer Jade Samuels (Mawa Theatre Co / Shakespeare’s Globe) to strategize funding for your own projects.
  • 1-2-1 Artist Yoga & Body Tuning: A private, tailored 1-hour physical/breath session with actor and movement creative Jasmine Colangelo.

We don’t stand to personally benefit from this; we're just a pair of writers who are trying to finally get our work made. This whole project has been made over about 4 years purely on the kindness of people up and down the country and we're really proud of that fact.

Even if there’s nothing for you here, we are dependant on donations from kind people, so if you think there’s a service or an item you could offer up, please get in touch and we can arrange that with you. We'd also love to hear from other performers going to the Fringe, so we can stay in touch and support you to! Let us know where you are and when you're playing, so we can come watch!

When we all go up, we all go up together. ❤️

First-time writers asking for community support with our debut

Hi folks,

We’re the writers a play called 'We Had Fun' that we will be taking to the Edinburgh Fringe this August. To help us cover the cost we're running a Crowdfunder. We didn’t want to just go all around the houses asking people to open their wallets, so we’re working on a ‘rewards’ model, so people can hopefully get something back for anything they put in. Everything on offer has been kindly donated by people we’ve met during our time working in the industry.

Between us, we’ve been working in the film and theatre for over 10 years and so several of the rewards on the funder may be beneficial to people in  this sub. We're trying to offer all of these things out at a discount on their usual cost. Currently we’ve got:

  • A consultation with BBC Script Editor Tom Ward, who will read your comedy/drama TV script (up to 30 pages), provide full written notes, and do a 1-hour follow-up video call
  • A 2-hour, small-group intensive workshop with Emmeline (BFI NETWORK, ACE, BBC Arts) to steer your funding strategy and crowdfunding hacks.
  • Video editor Ethan Crowther will take your footage and edit a polished 1-minute trailer (16:9 for web/YouTube + a 9:16 portrait version for social media).
  • A year’s membership to The Developing Room, a creative hub for filmmakers, including free cinema tickets, partner events, and short film fund entries
  • BAFTA member and award-winning composer Joanna Karselis will critique your 4-minute track/cue over a Zoom feedback session

We're not trying to be solicitous or untoward, so apologies if that is how it seems - we did clear this post with the mods first, but they warned us we might catch some sharp questions from the community, so if anyone has any questions about this or our experiences of working as writers, we’re more than happy to field anything.

We don’t stand to personally benefit from this; we're just a pair of writers who are trying to finally get our work made. This whole project has been made over about 4 years purely on the kindness of people up and down the country and we're really proud of that fact.

Birmingham Artists looking for support from our community

Hello folks,

We're a pair of local theatre-makers and we're taking our new play - We Had Fun - to one of the top venues at the Edinburgh Fringe this August -for any of you not working in the creative arts, it’s a massive undertaking, and to help us cover the staggering costs of accommodation and staging, we're running a Crowdfunder that's offering up rewards instead of just asking for cash, because we'd like to give back to the city that's supported us over the 4 years we've been making this thing.

We've been lucky to have been helped out by some of our brilliant Brum independent businesses, who have stepped up to support us. They’ve donated some local rewards to our Crowdfunder at discounted rates. If you want to support local arts and get a brilliant deal, we've got things like:

  • A brewery tour for two and taproom experience donated by Attic Brewery
  • 3 literal cinema-sized (30x40 inch) film posters from the Midlands Arts Centre (MAC) archives
  • A complete Curly Cut, Style, Manicure, and Gold-Tier nail art package from Strand & Lock (Digbeth)
  • A 1-to-1 **Somatic Experiencing Taster Session (**nervous system regulation and stress recovery session) in Edgbaston with a BACP psychotherapist (not a clue, but I'm as intrigued as you are)

Both of us moved to Birmingham about a million years ago to train as actors, and we both consider it our home. We're proud of our city and we wanted to make sure that we could ask for its support and let it be part of what we're trying to do. We checked with the moderation team and they a-ok'd this post, so huge thanks to them as well.

Anyway, happy to answer any questions and chat to people about anything that they've got in mind. If you fancy snagging a deal while helping two idiots from round the corner show get to the Fringe, you can check out the rewards here: https://crowdfund.edfringe.com/p/wehadfun

Cheers for looking, and if there's nothing for you there, we would love people to reach out with anything they'd like to donate. Loadsa love.
