First trip to China in October — Beijing + Shanghai for 1 week, what should I know?

Hi everyone!

I’m planning my first trip to China this October and I’ll have roughly one week total, including the flight.

My plan is very simple:

🇨🇳 Beijing – 3 days
🇨🇳 Shanghai – 3 days
✈️ The remaining time will be for the international flights/travel.

I know one week isn’t a lot for China, so I’m intentionally keeping the itinerary simple and focusing only on these two cities rather than trying to see too much.

I’d really appreciate advice from people who have recently traveled to China, especially first-time visitors.

🏯 Beijing
With only 3 days, what would you prioritize?
I’m thinking about:

• Great Wall (Mutianyu)
• Forbidden City
• Tiananmen Square
• Temple of Heaven
• Hutongs / local neighborhoods

Is that realistic in 3 days, or am I trying to do too much?

Would you recommend Mutianyu or another section of the Great Wall?

Is it better to book a private driver/tour for the Great Wall, or can I easily organize it myself?

🌃 Shanghai
I’ll have around 3 days here.
What would you absolutely not miss?

I’m thinking about:

• The Bund
• Pudong skyline
• Shanghai Tower
• Yu Garden
• Nanjing Road
• French Concession
• Maybe Shanghai Disneyland if it makes sense with such a short trip

Would you recommend spending a full day at Disneyland, or is that too much when I only have 3 days?

Would you do a day trip to Suzhou/Hangzhou, or just stay in Shanghai?

🚄 Beijing → Shanghai

Would you recommend the high-speed train or flying?

I’ve heard the high-speed train is very easy and comfortable, but I’m wondering whether flying would save time.

How far in advance should I book the train?
Is booking through Trip.com easy for foreigners?
Do I simply use my passport for the train?

📱 Apps / Internet
This is probably my biggest concern.
I’ve read so many different things about Alipay, WeChat, VPNs and eSIMs that I’m starting to overthink it.

What setup would you recommend for a first-time visitor?

Should I have:

• Alipay
• WeChat
• Trip.com
• AMap/Gaode Maps
• DiDi
• Google Translate
• Dianping

Which ones are actually essential?

Do I need both Alipay and WeChat, or can I survive mostly with Alipay?

For eSIMs, what has worked reliably for you recently?

Did you need a VPN, or did your eSIM allow you to access Google, Instagram, WhatsApp, etc. normally?

Should I configure and verify Alipay/WeChat before leaving my home country?

Any problems using foreign Visa/Mastercard cards?

💳 Money

Is China basically cashless for tourists now?

How much RMB cash would you carry as an emergency backup for a one-week trip?

Are there still situations where cash is necessary?
Any tips for using QR-code payments safely and correctly?

🗣️ Language

How difficult is the language barrier in Beijing and Shanghai?

Can I realistically get around using Google Translate?

Do hotels and tourist attractions generally have enough English?

Are there any basic Chinese words/phrases you strongly recommend learning before going?

🏨 Hotel

Where would you recommend staying in Beijing for a first-time visitor?

And where in Shanghai?

Is it worth paying extra for an international hotel chain, or are local hotels perfectly fine?

Are there any important things foreigners should know when booking hotels in China?

🚇 Getting around

How easy is the metro in Beijing and Shanghai for foreigners?

Would you mostly use the metro, or DiDi?

Is DiDi through Alipay reliable for foreigners?

Do I need to worry about taxis or should I just use DiDi?

🚽 Everyday things

How important is it to carry toilet paper/tissues?

How common are squat toilets in Beijing and Shanghai?

Anything else you would recommend carrying every day?

🍜 Food

What foods should I absolutely try in Beijing and Shanghai?

Any restaurants or local dishes that are particularly worth seeking out?

How difficult is ordering food without speaking Chinese?

⚠️ Biggest concerns

Finally, what are the things that first-time visitors usually get wrong about China?

Anything you wish you had known before your first trip?

Any scams, cultural mistakes, tourist traps or logistical problems I should avoid?

And most importantly:
Is one week with 3 days in Beijing + 3 days in Shanghai enough to get a good first impression of China, or would you recommend focusing on only one city?

I’m really excited about going, but I’m probably overthinking the logistics a bit. 😅

Thanks in advance for any advice!
