I’ve been producing for a bit and I keep running into the same issue:

I can find or download presets that sound close to what I want, but when I try to recreate sounds from tracks I like, I’m basically guessing.

Like I’ll hear a bass or lead and think:
“okay I kind of get it…” but not really enough to rebuild it from scratch.

I’ve watched tutorials, messed with presets, etc, but it still feels like I’m missing how everything actually connects.

For people who are good at sound design:

What actually made it click for you?
Was it just repetition, or something specific?

And do you think breaking down sounds step-by-step is actually helpful, or do you just learn by doing?

I've been producing for a while and I keep downloading preset packs, using them, but never actually understanding what's happening under the hood. I can hear the sound I want in a reference track but replicating it feels like guessing.

Started messing around with an idea. Basically a tool that reverse engineers any audio into a Serum patch AND breaks down exactly how to recreate it yourself step by step. Not just "here's the preset", but like, here's why OSC A is set this way, here's what the filter is doing, etc.

Two questions for anyone who's been through this:

  1. Is this actually a problem you've had, or did you just grind through tutorials?
  2. Would a step-by-step breakdown alongside the preset actually help you learn, or would you just use the preset and ignore the tutorial?
