Article on Mark Carney from 2013: "He didn't singlehandedly rescue the Canadians from the worst of the global financial crisis - he didn't really need to. But boy, did he win over the press."
Came across this old 2013 piece on Mark Carney and it’s kind of wild reading it now that he’s in power and we're seeing what's happening.
Flanders goes on to describe how a large portion of Carney's success came from timing and luck . . . much like Carney looks insanely impressive coming in after Trudeau and lucky for Carney, Trump showed up and scared timid Canadians with his 51st state talk.
Also:
>Paul Krugman says this all makes Canada a test case, external for two somewhat different views of the financial crisis and its aftermath.
>One view says that it was primarily down to the banks and their problems. If that's true, you'd expect Canada to stay out of trouble, for all the reasons I've already discussed.
>The other view is that the banking crisis was just a sideshow for the main event which was the housing boom and bust and the long-term implications for the economy of households being stuck with so much debt.
Remember that Mark Carney said he's best in a crisis and you have to ask yourself if it's because he actually solves problems or if knows that he's just good at making it seem like he does and getting the credit.
