Today I received ₹10,000 from my District Magistrate's office, and instead of feeling happy, I feel guilty.
A few months ago, after qualifying JEE Advanced and getting an IIT seat, I wrote a letter requesting assistance for a college-related travel expense. I didn't claim that my family was poor or unable to afford my education. I just explained my situation and made a request.
When the money came, I thought my father would be happy. In my mind, I was trying to help, contribute something on my own, and reduce at least a small burden. I even thought it would be a nice surprise.
But my father was upset.
He told me that we never needed the money and that I should have spoken to him before doing something like this. He also said that this amount could have gone to a student whose family genuinely struggles financially.
The thing is, I never intended to take away someone else's opportunity. I wasn't trying to be dishonest. I genuinely believed I was doing something good and taking responsibility for my own future.
Now I keep looking at that ₹10,000 and instead of feeling proud, I feel confused.
Was I wrong to accept the assistance? If you were in my place, what would you do?
