"Verify if you are human" checks on journal websites are getting out of hand
Used to be much less common back in the day. In the past 6 months, I have been experiencing it across most 'big' publisher websites. It's just inconvenient and slow. I have tried to access from home network, hospital network, with VPN, without VPN - everything.
I understand that they are trying to prevent their data from being read by webscrapers, but so much for 'open access articles'?
It's not like their servers are persistently overwhelmed. PMC, for example, doesn't engage in those checks.
