My son found a blind cockatiel.
On the way home with his kindergarten, my son found this cockatiel. It was stuck in a fench, and the teacher told me he got it free. The teacher said they would put it down after I had got my son, but we decided to bring it home and to the vet. I don’t know much about birds. Vet did some (pricey 😮💨) tests of it’s feathers, crop and droppings. Said it they looked clean, but the bird was very dehydrated and exhausted. Mouth filled with dirt or soil. Completely blind, likely glaucoma he said. The eyes look swollen but clean. He gave me some pain medicine for an injured leg (the one stuck in the wire fench). I’ve posted the bird in local groups, but no one has contacted us. We will keep it if it survies, can live a good life and won’t get claimed. It’s still very groggy, not scared at all though. My son has been sitting with it, and offered some water in a little cap, which it has been drinking from. I bought some electrolytes at the vet to add in the water. I’ve put it in our late cat’s carrier for now. It eats lot, and drinks when the water is offered.
Can a blind cockatiel live a good life? Any advices or experience with this? Was referred to this page, as they said it was for special needs birds.
And can you visually or otherwise sex these birds? My son calls it Little Dino for now.
Thank you.
