How do I go about writing this without compromising the character's values?
I am in the process of writing a long romance fic, in which one of the characters (Character A) is an investigative journalist and the other (Character B) runs a big corporation. Character A cares a lot about his job and the work he does because of some abuse he faced in the past, and goes to interview and investigate Character B because of an anonymous tip. He ends up finding nothing, and they build a professional working relationship, where Character B respects Character A's commitment to journalism, and Character A recognizes that Character B stands out against the people he often reports on. The problem I am running into occurs as the romance develops further. As they grow closer and become official in their relationship, would that not cause problems with the integrity of Character A's reporting? If Character A had written about Character B, but then it comes out that they are romantically involved, would it not jeopardize Character A's work and career? I don't want to not address it because I feel like it is an important part of the character, but at the same time just having them say "Oh yeah we're dating but that doesn't change the fact I value news" feels like a shallow excuse that wouldn't pass in the eyes of the public. Does anyone have any ideas on how I could go about exploring this?
