5.1 mmol (92) fasting result considered normal or not?

I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes a few days ago, following a two hour blood test. The diagnosis was based on the fasting blood result, which was 5.1 mmol. I had no food or drinks in 12 and a half hours before that blood draw.

When I got my glucometer it said that 5.3 was the upper limit for morning bloods.

I did my first morning reading at home today and it was 5.1. Officially within range, but exactly the same as the reading that caused the diagnosis.

So I'm not sure if that means nothing has changed since I started the diet. Should I expect this number to go down if things are improving?

Diagnosed at 28 weeks

I was just diagnosed with GDM yesterday, at 28 weeks 1 day.

At my last few OB appointments (I have a consultation and an ultrasound every 3 to 4 weeks) she mentioned that the abdomen was looking big. She never suggested having the gestational diabetes test any sooner though.

I'm wondering if it had been caught sooner could earlier management have positively affected the baby's growth and development?

I'm feeling kind of annoyed that my obstetrician left my glucose tolerance test to so late in my pregnancy. I'm really worried now that long-term harm may have been done to the baby.

Can anybody advise or reassure me regarding this? Thanks!

Rotunda, gestational diabetes glucose tolerance test.

Edit: thanks so much for all of your replies. Looks like no water at all for the Rotunda. I'll be looking forward to water and brekkie afterwards!

I know that guidelines for the glucose tolerance test differ a lot from one hospital to another. Just wondering, if anyone recently had this test done at the Rotunda could you please tell me if water is included in the fasting?

The information sheet says nothing to eat or drink from 8p.m. the evening before, but I have difficulties with blood tests when I'm dehydrated. My veins are bad enough when I'm hydrated!

So, if anybody knows if water is allowed, or sips of water are allowed, please let me know. Thanks!

I'm 25 weeks pregnant and yesterday I was diagnosed with a small DVT in one leg. I'm on daily anticoagulant injections now but the doctors gave me no advice regarding fitness/staying active.

I was far more active in my last pregnancy (hiking, mountain biking, turbo trainer, Pilates, etc) but I've been doing very little this time around due to 4 months of severe nausea and then pelvic girdle pain.

What I've read online today suggests that low impact exercise would be helpful to prevent the DVT from getting worse.

Does anyone else have experience with this, or recommendations of what type of exercise would be safe? Thanks!

A few days ago I posted asking if anyone else had swelling only in one foot or leg, as it was on both sides during my last pregnancy so I wasn't sure if one side only was normal.

Some people thought, as I and my GP did, that it was probably just the baby pressing on one side blocking blood flow, or an injury that was being irritated.

Others said to get it checked out immediately.

I went to my GP on Monday, who also thought it was probably nothing but referred me for a scan just to be on the safe side.

I spent all day yesterday in a hospital. It turns out there is a clot in one leg, so I'm now on daily blood thinners until two months postpartum. Hopefully all will be okay now that I have the injections.

Posting now just for anyone else who might be concerned about swelling during pregnancy. I had no pain or warmth from the leg, and the calf didn't feel hard. So, if in doubt at all about unusual pregnancy symptoms get checked by a doctor.

This is my second pregnancy and I had very swollen feet with the first, to the point that I couldn't wear shoes, only loose sandals. I had high blood pressure in the last two weeks of that pregnancy but made it to 40 weeks before being induced.

I'm now 25 weeks and have bad swelling in one foot and ankle. I'm going to see my GP on Monday but it's making me pretty anxious.

I'm thinking it can't be a clot as the swelling started a few weeks ago (ie it's not sudden).

Does anyone have any experience or knowledge with this?

Thanks!
