Gassed during lifting

Hi all, I’m trying to keep my workouts close to what I did while preparing for pregnancy (lifting mostly) but I’m so gassed. I’m finding I need an extra minute rest between sets. Im also finding myself nauseous during workouts, which was my first sign I was pregnant. What has everyone else’s experiences been like? I’m pretty sure this is normal but I’m wondering if this is to be expected the whole pregnancy vs a 1st trimester thing.

Morning drink / preworkout substitute - for motivation

I’m looking for something to drink in the morning - not a pre-workout - and nothing with caffeine preferably OR very very low caffeine. I don’t really drink coffee so that’s not an option for me.

I used to drink Beachbody/Bodi energize and honestly, I’m kind of addicted to the lemon flavor. It’s by far my favorite pre-workout, but I haven’t been working out for a while now and don’t wanna do a pre-workout while pregnant. I also have a stem free pre-workout that I tried pre-pregnancy but I didn’t like it and it actually made me feel weird. I also used to drink a BCAA (C4 brand I think) from target and I really liked the flavor.

Liquid IV doesn’t cut it for me in the morning and I usually add it to my smoothie anyways so don’t want to have more than 1 a day.

I am trying Ladder so I wanna get back into my workouts!! I still have my Beachbody/Bodi subscription, but I’m just kind of tired of the workouts after like 8 years.

Anyways, I really like having a drink in the morning that motivates me to work out. I honestly feel like a pre-workout drink is more of a mental thing for me and just helps me get down to the gym - a placebo effect essentially hahah

Thoughts or suggestions?!

Two subchronic hematomas

I've been reading through older posts on subchronic hematomas on here and gotten a lot of good information and insight, but I'm making this post in the hopes of getting a little more perspective on the emotional side of having a hematoma.

At 7 weeks I did a very light workout and had a lot of blood. I had an ultrasound to see what was going on and they found 2 subchronic hematomas. The nurse didn't give me advice, but I didn't workout again after out of fear.

I had my 11 week scan last week and they're both still there. One got a tiny bit smaller, one got bigger. My OB said, "The blood is already there. I wouldn't do anything too strenuous, but if you workout and bleed, your baby will be fine. If it's too upsetting and worrisome for you though, prioritize your mental health and skip the gym."

I'm too familiar with pregnancy loss and decided the blood is just too triggering and I can't risk it and spiraling seeing blood. So women who have been in my shoes, or currently are, that have had to put workouts on a hiatus, how did you handle it emotionally? Building the muscles I have greatly improved my chronic illnesses and the thought of losing that is such a bummer. Any advice or personal anecdotes are greatly appreciated.

Madeline Moves for someone experienced in strength training but now has 3 kids and no time?

8 months postpartum. Exclusively breastfeeding. 3 kids. Summer. I have strength trained for 15+ years and am well versed in it all. I loved going to the gym when I had only 2, but now having 3 kids, getting out of the house is a feat itself at this current stage of life.

I’ve been doing an at-home strength app (FIGR, local girl I know) using the barbell and all but the workouts take me minimum an hour. And that is killing me with getting interrupted 47395x on top of it. I don’t want my kids whole day to be me working out (don’t tell me to get up before them, the baby still doesn’t sleep through the night lol). I kept hearing good things about Madeline Moves and I LOVE that there is a 30 minute option. That seems so much more doable at this current stage of life. I know the chaos is not forever, but definitely right now 😵‍💫 But I’ve read it’s cardio/heavy. Will I be bummed with the lack of real strength workouts?

I AM in a place of being ready to lose fat (safely) now that I’m 8 months PP and my milk is established. So I’m like huh, maybe cardio-heavy is what I need for now (haven’t done that in ages) AND it’s only 30 mins. But will I lose all my strength?! There is a free week I am going to try but just looking for advice. Posting in postpartum too but this crew is more versed in the app itself.

Thanks for reading all of that and helping a mom out.

Weightlifters: how much did you scale back?

TW: brief mention of pregnancy loss

I was pregnant March 10-May 20, and then about a month of recovery after the loss. When I was pregnant, I scaled back my lifting a lot. And then when I was recovering I wasn’t lifting at all.

I’m back to some of my usual weights now. And I just feel so much better lifting when I feel my muscles sore, it feels like I’m making more progress/I feel stronger, etc. so… I’m thinking for my next pregnancy… maybe I scaled back too much for the previous?

What did you ladies do?

Can't walk for more than 10 minutes without extreme abdominal tightness

36 weeks pregnant (first time). I've been active this whole pregnnacy, lifting x3-4 per week and walking. Was running up until 28 weeks. The third trimester has totally thrown me for a loop though. Specifically the last week. Fatigue is back. Weird appetite. But the thing bothering me the most is that I feel like i cant even walk. Anything over 10 minutes and my abdomen tightens up so bad I have to stop. And then round ligament pain as well. It feels like the rest of the day I am tight and I will get BH contractions at night.

Is this normal? I know im near the end but this seems like such a drastic difference to what I could tolerate just a few weeks ago. Baby is fine, hiccuping and kicking and rolling around and having a great time lol. Im just wondering if anyone else felt this way.

Walking pad

I’m currently 19 weeks, FTM. I do prenatal Pilates 3x a week and walk outdoors 5 miles 3x a week. Unfortunately this heat wave is too much for me to be able to do my walks. Does anyone have a recommendation for a walking pad? I don’t want to go all out with a treadmill since I normally walk in all temperatures and weather conditions (I have a husky who never wants to be inside), but I need to acknowledge that I can’t do that while pregnant.

DAE stop exercising for most of the first trimester?

Hello lovely humans. I am FTM (32) and 10weeks 3 days. Pre pregnancy I rode Peloton pretty aggressively and I also work a manual labor job. Since the 6 week mark I have lost so much energy and apart from walking, have basically stopped working out. I absolutely hate it and I am really terrified I’ve set myself back a lot. Did anyone else take a chunk of the first trimester off and get back to it in the 2nd? Was getting back into it hard?

Thanks all 🩶

Casual / Hobby Runners - how did you adjust your training?

hello! reaching out to my fellow runners who are definitely runners but not quite as experienced or athletic?

I’ve been running regularly for about a year now, 3-4 runs a week, two half marathons and several fun 5ks. First trimester I absolutely tanked and ran maybe once? I am now 15 weeks, feeling better, and am believing I can run a half in September if I start training now.

Are there any strategies y'all recommend for training pregnant - walk/run intervals, adding a minute or two to pre-pregnancy pace? More pre-run fueling? Mid-run snacks? Anything you’ve felt has made the difference that’s allowed you to keep running enjoyably?

thank you!!

Strava

For ladies using Strava, did you cancel your premium membership during pregnancy? There's no pregnancy setting and all the premium features feel kind of moot at the moment.... I'm not getting segment QOMs right now, not PRing segments, and the 'fitness' score has always been BS but currently looks like I'm in the worst shape of my life just because I've been finding I need a little more recovery time between big efforts.

I've set it to expire rather than renew next month after 5 years as a subscriber and honestly it feels kind of freeing to be listening to my body instead of chasing stats!

The only stat I'd like to keep up with is the 'active weeks streak," and that isn't a premium feature (373 weeks and counting!)!

Pregnant runners

Out of curiosity, when did your usual running become difficult? I'm reasonably fit but overweight (booking BMI of 29). I did however take up running a year ago and have been doing it 3 times per week plus lifting since. I love it. I'm not fast and I only usually do 3-5km. I'm 16 weeks now and I'm finding it quite difficult to not keep stopping for walk breaks. What's everyone else's experience of this? I know it's ok to stop and listen to my body but it's just frustrating because I'm running 1km max at a time before needing a quick breather.

Pregnancy fitness besides lifting?

What are are some ways to stay active without lifting. I like lifting for my legs, but otherwise it’s boring and so repetitive. I’ve always enjoyed classes because I grew playing club volleyball. In my 20’s now I’m into kickboxing but other than that what else could I do? I get 8k steps minimum a day to keep the body moving, but I’m honestly bored.

Fibroid, Doppler Notching, Placenta Previa at 12 weeks. Need reassurance.

I just went to my 12-week NT Scan. Baby looks good but they found a large fibroid in my uterus along with Placenta Previa and the uterine artery dopplers performed shows notching. At the appointment, I was not ready to receive all of this information so I had no idea what to ask about in detail. My MFM doctor put me on pelvic rest and modified activity. She said it's fine to workout but decrease intensity by half. Also advised that I take aspirin for the notching. They told me not to worry too much about any of this as it can improve, but I'm spiraling…not only of the increased risks but because I basically have to give up half my workouts. Prior to this news I had continued my pre-pregnancy workout split of 3 leg days, 2 upper body and 1 long cardio session, along with daily walks. Has anyone been through any of this? I can't help but worry about a preterm delivery, preeclampsia and all the other risks. I really want to deliver naturally and can't believe any of this is happening.

Exercise after FET

I'm doing my second FET next week. The first one I just went for walks for the first 3 days and then I went back to my normal exercise routine (bootcamp and running most days) but took it slightly easier. So not going as heavy with weights, not racing etc. This FET did not take and I've never tested positive after 3+ years of trying.

I'm wondering whether it's worth holding off on all exercise during the TTW other than walking and whether anyone else has experience with this. I'm in my early 30s and the only reason for my infertility seems to be PCOS and exercise really helps my mental health and manage this condition, so I'm torn on what to do. The clinic says to carry on as normal, but I don't want to do anything that could stop it from taking.

Exercise during C section recovery?

Hi all! I posted my fit pregnancy journey on my due date a few weeks ago. My water broke that night and after a challenging labour I ended up having an unplanned C-section.

I’m just over 2 weeks postpartum now. I’m feeling ok but still have some pain. Doing short, slow walks but the lack of activity is making me feel a bit lethargic. I know I need to wait until 6 weeks to be cleared for exercise but is there anything I can be doing before then to help with recovery / mental health? I have a belly band arriving on Monday which I’m hoping will make walking feel a bit easier. My partner suggested doing a few mins on the elliptical because it’s lower impact than walking but if I google it the advice is not to do any gym activities until after 6 weeks. I don’t want to hinder my recovery but I would love to move a bit more. I know there would be a recovery period with a vaginal birth but the surgery really caught me off guard! If you had a C-section, what were you doing, if anything, in that initial 6 weeks?

Pelvic floor

Hi everyone, FTM, 26 weeks pregnant. Over the past few years, I’ve mostly focused on strength training. Not that I’m strong, but at 5’5 and 130 lbs I could lunge 70 lbs/deadlift 100 lbs/bench 80 lbs, hip thrust 130lb. I also did 20 min HIIT 1-2x/week and occasionally Norwegian 4x4. What I realized before pregnancy was that my lower core was not as strong as the rest of my body.
Now I’m trying to do simple clamshells, light lunges, and glute kickbacks on my knees with no weight and I feel pain in what I think is probably my pelvic floor (in areas where I never felt pain before pregnancy). Has anyone experienced something similar? What did you do?
I can work through the pain, but intuitively it doesn’t feel right. I can still do other exercises, but whenever I isolate one leg, I start feeling it. It’s pretty annoying because these are such light exercises and they’re causing pain…

Ski/Boarding

How does the group feel about skiing/boarding 4-6 weeks post partum? I live about 20 minutes from our ski area and skied/boarded about 45+ days last season. Due Jan 15 wondering if late February will be realistic even just to get an hour in once a week? I’m such a snow addict it’s hard for me to imagine missing a season especially if snow is good. Of course at some point will take baby up there to hangout in the trees!

So frustrated with pelvic floor recovery

I'm just venting but... I'm about 6 weeks PP with my first and I'm just so frustrated with how long pelvic floor recovery takes.

I was in pelvic floor PT throughout my third trimester and started up again at 2 weeks PP due to a sacral injury during birth.

I did not realize that my pelvic floor was SO weak! My pelvic floor PT said that you don't notice it until after birth because baby's head is kind of holding everything in place during the third trimester. Doing a simple bridge I felt so wobbly.

I don't like the peeing myself a little bit at unexpected moments. I hate that I can't run yet and I won't be able to for at least 6 more weeks. I hate the weakness when I'm even trying to go for a brisk walk.

I'm doing my exercises as much as I can and I've definitely seen improvement since I started but truly I did not realize how much pregnancy damages your pelvic floor!

Please, those of you who made it out of the trenches - tell me that it will be okay! 😢

Loss of appetite post partum

I’m 4 weeks post partum and had a horrendous birth which you can read about on my page, but since then I am really struggling with my appetite. Does anyone have any vegetarian meals and suggestions for snacks high in protein for me?

Many thanks
