Mage Errant Question

I get that progression fantasy can often require a slow start, so I have a question about Mage Errant. I'm about 5 hours into the first book and it's got very strong YA vibes with a young immature MC. I'm not sure how much of this vibe I'm in the mood for right now, and I'm trying to get a sense of if/how soon this story will progress.

I know this story ranks among many people's favorites, so I wanted to check before I dropped it.

Should I paint/prime under my second story deck to inhibit mold growth?

This is a waterproof gaco covered plywood deck. Contractor recommended we prime it with a mold-resistant paint. We're in the Pacific Northwest so there's a lot of moisture around a lot of the time.

That said, I've never heard of anyone suggesting we do this except for our contractor. Would you recommend for or against it?

Not sure why my photos aren't uploading. I'll leave this one up regardless.
