The little adenium seedling that could

One of a batch of 20 seedlings from an open pollinated flower on a multi petaled grafted adenium from last years spring. Several other have already bloomed but none have had a flower near this size. The pod has produced a mix of single and multi petaled plants. The plants are not fast growers as most adenium but it has been fun watching them grow.
It is in a 4 inch plastic pot

Pachypodiums (gracilius) fertilizing

I have read many different ways to fertilize Pachypodiums, including adding a minor element mix treatment above and beyond the regular water soluble once or twice a month during growing season let
Me state that I am a lazy grower and if there is easier way to grow pachy’s I will look for it and find it.
Being an orchid grower as well, I use a controlled release fertilizer called nutricote 6 month or 9 month formula. When I pot pachy’s with new media I add a teaspoon on 4 inch pots and tablespoon on 6 inch pots,of this nutricote as top dressing. then cover with chicken grit granite (about 1/4 inch) to keep all from washing out during waterings and or rain. This keeps my maintenance to only water as needed , no fertilizer needed as nutricote has all and will be used by end of season.
It seems to be doing just fine and plants are showing their appreciation of a good diet.
This a Pachypodium rosulatum ssp gracilius starting to form its natural shape.

First Pachypodium rosulatum seedling batch

My first attempt at Pachypodium seed sowing. These are rosulatums ssp rosulatum from my own mother plants (PFN sourced) from last spring and got about 90 pct sprout rate. Have done many adeniums seeds and in comparison pachy’s are way slower growers. Will try more seeds in next week or so in better mix. Have saundersii, cactipes, gracilius. Rosulatums, rosulatum ssp mandritsara all ready to be planted and may even have some to trade or sell, possibly on palm street .

Encyclia alata monster

Yes, this is a monster plant naturalized in the center of a three roebellini palms cluster in south Florida. Original from a compot I got H&R in Hawaii and shared with my friend. It is in a perfect spot gets plenty of light, a dedicated patron who feeds it and vacuums out the. Seeds from the palms as needed. This has been huge but it now has reached monster stage. Estimated number of flower spikes is around 75.

Aerides roses (alba)

A little aerides roses alba that I have for 3 years from a Miami orchid show Thai vendor. It was a small rootless plant that has really not grown well. However it is putting a log tail pristine white flowers.
Edit: correct name is rosea, not roses, my bad

Walmart densiflorums graduation day

My Walmart/costa farms/suspected Chinese source rootless Pachypodium densiflorums have been up potted from 2.5 inch to 4 inch pots. These were all well rooted now and the root system was not disturbed at all to do the up pot transition. Media was still very fresh and could probably also last through next year when they move from 4 to 6 inch pots.
They now have the rest of the summer and fall to grow and fill the pot with roots for next spring bloom. Was thinking of doing a breakdown of materials uses with a maybe a few if there is any interest

Densiflorum x eburneum flowers?

Looking to see if anyone has bloomed densiflorums x eburneum cross seedlings for flower color variation. Densiflorums are yellow and eburneum are white and would expect a mix of both or either color, unless one plant is dominant and the other recessive.
Thanks

Pachypodium baronii portrait

A family portrait of my baronii siblings, the biggest one has massive leaves. I grew baronii from out of Africa 25 years ago and don’t remember the foliage being that big. Hoping to get some flowers in near future

Walmart densiflorums update

Looks like all of them have leafed out and some have roots pushing through bottom of 3 inch terracotta pots.
I can easily lift the pots by pinching a few leaves safely. No sign of any bloom effort and I expect that there will be no bloom out of these batches until next year. One of my other older Densiflorums has already bloomed. Looking forward to all of these (36) to bloom at same time next year

Pachypodium rosulatums ssp gracilius

Nice little gracilius (2 plants) starting to mold into its own without any restrictions or modifications or specialty care. Just good drainage, some controlled release fertilizer (same as all other pachys), full blazing Florida sunshine, 90+ degree temps from mid April until late October and soaked daily. Daily down pours have pretty much taken over watering duty.

Pachypodium Densiflorum first bloom

A 3 year old seedling from PFN , and first time blooming. Another seedling from same source and literally looks exactly alike has decide to pass on blooming. Nice yellow flower and will have a mess of company by all the Walmart densiflorums (if they are in fact straight densiflorums. I suspect that the Walmart plants are actually hybrids tween Densiflorum x eburneum. Time will tell.

Paraphalaenopsis laycockyi and serpentilingua

Not going to find these two orchid at your garden center. The last two pics are the serpentilingua They are members of the vanda family and grow same as vandas. No media necessary as long as you mist them daily. Same culture as vandas, bright light, good air movement, feed weekly and keep very warm. My greenhouse has gone up to 110degrees and no problem with any of the vanda.

Phalaenopsis repotting season

Conventional wisdom has been that Mother’s Day through Memorial Day is usually THE TIME to repot phals. Unless you have summer blooming plants like several species like bellina. The idea behind this is that you want to remove any spikes and flowers that have been draining the plant of energy to let them recharge the battery , replace media if necessary, rest and allow to grow stronger and larger to give a better bloom effort the next blooming season.
I just finished the process and am relieved to be rid of moss. Switched to coco chips as they work better in my environment. A couple of novelty phals still had a bloom and left them on a few more days, but the deed is done. Am sure there will be some interesting convos to follow. If you bought a blooming phal to let bloom until it’s half dead and then throw it away an obviously this doesn’t apply to you. If you want to grow your phal to get an improved bloom effort for next season, you may want to consider repotting now.

Another Lowe’s rescue, a year later

Vanda urawain belle #453, a year later from being rescued from a Lowe’s clearance. Nice looking and strong flowers, definite keeper
Still working in reducing the palm tree effect, but it will take time and definitely on the right path.

Rosulatum/mandritsara

My largest rosulatums variant from mandritsara area. From PFN, a scratch and dent sale two years ago. This is first bloom in my care, last year was repotted and did not bloom. In an 8 inch terracotta pot. Differs from standard rosulatums in several ways, goes full dormant, starts growing later, spines are different. It’s possibly a hybrid? Have nothing to compare as a mandritsara standard. Will observe for future reference.

Just when I thought I was done… they pull me back in!

Was sent on an errand to Wally World this morning and as is my custom… off I went to garden center just to make sure there were no Pachypodium Densiflorum. To my chagrin I found a new wooden rack with more Pachypodiums and I just could not leave them there in bad company. I will contact my shrink on Monday.
I draw the line at 3 full trays.
