So I made an alien-inspired cutting board...

I wanted to make a cutting board that, if an alien came to Earth and wanted to buy one, this would be the board it would choose. 😄

To bring that vision to life, I combined wengepurpleheart, and cherry through 7 glue-ups to create a pattern that feels organic, futuristic, and just a little mysterious. As always, I had a rough idea of how the design should look, but the natural grain and color of the wood played their own part and shaped the final result.

Size: 44 × 29 × 3.5 cm (17.3 × 11.4 × 1.4 in)
Material: Wenge, Purpleheart & Cherry
Construction: End grain
Finish: Food-safe mineral oil

I Challenged Myself to Build an Alien-Inspired Cutting Board

Some of the comments on one of my previous cutting boards said the pattern looked like something from Star Trek. That got me thinking... what if I leaned even further into that sci-fi vibe?

So I challenged myself to create a pattern that feels truly alien, like something you might find on another planet.

I built it from wenge, purpleheart, and cherry, and once I applied the oil, it exceeded all my expectations. It honestly turned out to be the most epic cutting board I've ever made.

I'd love to hear what it reminds you of.

I built a cutting board almost entirely from Purpleheart

I had been saving this piece of Purpleheart for years, waiting for a project that felt worthy of it.

Most cutting boards I've seen use Purpleheart only as an accent, but I decided to build an entire design around it. Given the price of Purpleheart, every cut felt a little more stressful.

The board is made primarily from Purpleheart with Cherry accents and measures 37 x 27 x 3 cm

I couldn't get this pattern out of my head, so I built it

When I started making cutting boards, I noticed that many designs followed similar patterns. That inspired me to experiment with my own ideas and see how far I could push geometric designs.

I've created quite a few original patterns since then, but this is definitely the craziest one so far.

I also took a big risk by making purpleheart the main wood species. It's expensive and visually very bold, but I wanted to fully commit to the concept.

It ended up being the most expensive cutting board I've ever made.

I'd love to hear what you think.

New Walnut/Padauk Variation of My Original End-Grain Pattern

Just added a new variation of my original pattern

I've been building and refining this pattern for quite some time, experimenting with different wood combinations. What started as my original design in Walnut/Maple was later followed by Walnut/Purpleheart, and now I've completed a Walnut/Padauk version.

The board measures 60 × 30 × 5 cm and is made as an end-grain cutting board. I enjoy exploring how different wood species can completely change the look and feel of the same pattern while keeping its core design intact.

For me, the Walnut/Padauk combination creates a particularly striking contrast, with the warm red tones of the Padauk bringing a new dimension to the pattern.

I'd love to hear which version you prefer:

• Walnut / Maple

• Walnut / Purpleheart

• Walnut / Padauk

Thanks for taking a look!

My latest original design

As usual, I’ve been experimenting with different wood combinations for this pattern and ended up with this one.

Walnut, Maple & Oak
Size: 43 × 29 × 3.5 cm

The oak gives it a warm, almost golden tone that makes the whole board feel a bit more royal. What do you think?

Perfect Glue-Ups Start Long Before the Glue

Perfect glue-ups usually don’t start at the clamping stage.
Most of the alignment is already decided by the preparation beforehand.

This is part of the setup and workflow I use for my cutting boards to keep everything aligned during glue-ups.

I’ve been experimenting with different wood combinations for this pattern and ended up making two variations.

  • Walnut & Maple 60 × 30 × 5 cm (≈ 13 3/8 × 8 1/4 × 1 5/8 in)
  • Walnut & Purpleheart 34 × 21 × 4 cm (≈ 23 5/8 × 11 3/4 × 2 in)

Both have a completely different feel one more contrast-heavy, the other a bit more subtle.

Curious what you think: Purpleheart or Maple?
