These are relatively light walnuts, maybe the lightest I’ve handle so far. I think they look really cute and very suitable for traveling.
The colour darkens a lot faster than I expected.
My first pair of Mantianxing walnuts.
A smaller pair, measuring 40 mm across the edges and 38 mm at the belly, with a weight of 44.5 g. They feel amazing in the hand, and the shell density is really solid.
The pattern may not be top-tier, but considering my limited budget, I’m already very satisfied with this pair.
Anyone else here a fan of Mantianxing walnuts?
They are crooked in just the right way, like two little mountains. They are fully intact and unmodified. Apart from the slightly weaker base, everything else is quite good, especially the bold ridges.
What drew me to this pair was mainly the excellent shell quality and density. They have an orange-red skin tone, a 40 mm edge, and weigh 44 g. The hand feel is really satisfying.
Buddha Belly walnut has really good shell quality, oily and waxy, which makes them really easy to turn red.
Yuanbao walnuts from an old collector. They're not perfect: crooked tips, uneven shoulders, and a slightly asymmetrical shape. But that's exactly what natural walnuts are like.
Treated/grafted walnuts are produced in much larger quantities. They usually have shallower textures, a rounder and flatter shape, larger size, and more uniform characteristics due to human intervention. As a result, matching pairs are easier to find.
Nature, however, isn't perfect.
Natural walnuts are often irregular, twisted, underdeveloped in some areas, or have yellow patches. Finding a well-matched pair in near-perfect condition is never easy. The trade-off for those visual imperfections is an incredible hand feel and exceptionally dense bone quality — they feel like two small stones in your hand.
So which do you choose: treated fruit or wild-grown?
Better looks for photos, or better hand feel?
I choose the latter. After all, the who
