Although he does say its early stage at the moment, it'd be a great signing i reckon
When the fellowship enter Moria its quite clear its a very inhospitable place, completely overrun with Goblins, Trolls and worse.
That being said, how did Balin's expedition survive for what i think is said to be 5 years? Surely it'd take hundreds if not a couple of thousand of Dwarves to establish a foothold in Moria which survived that long, and which was able to stretch from the eastern entrance all the way to the west.
Its always been a bit of a puzzle for me, either Balin's expedition must have been huge, larger than the forces involved in the Battle of Five Armies (for example), or things must have gotten worse after the expedition failed.
I believe the book just says he had "many companions" but surely we are talking an armies worth here.
