Found an early Crayola No. 16 box with 7 Binney & Smith crayons — collector help?
I recently found this old Crayola No. 16 Gold Medal School Crayons box with 7 early crayons still inside, and I’ve gone pretty far down the Crayola history rabbit hole trying to date everything. 😂
Based on the research I’ve done, I believe the box dates to around 1910–1912.
The readable crayons are Burnt Umber, Green, Purple, Gold Ochre, Prussian Blue, and Chrome Green. There’s also a seventh green crayon with the name hidden because the wrapper appears to have been folded/overlapped over the printing during manufacture. I think it may be Olive Green, but I’d love an experienced collector’s opinion.
Several of these colors appear to line up with the early No. 16 assortment, which is what really got my attention.
I know there’s no way to prove these seven have always belonged to this exact box, but they were found together.
Does anyone here collect early Binney & Smith/Crayola and recognize these wrappers? I’d especially love help dating them and identifying that mystery green crayon. Thanks in advance for any help!
