When I was a kid playing Doom 1 and 2 on the PC, I sometimes remember another marine would spawn during the playthrough. I don't really remember what level. They would ignore me and kind of do their own thing, killing demons.

Was this built into the single player game? Or was this some sort of co-op phenomenon?
