Headlight Restoration
I have been rocking a set of HR headlights with blacked-out housing and iron-man style DRL for a while now. I honestly liked the look at first but, the more I looked at it, the more I felt like the black housing didn't fit the WV2 paint as well as I wanted. I've been leaning more towards an OEM+ look, so I ended up picking up this used set.
The lenses were a little oxidized and had some yellowing, so I decided to restore them properly instead of just polishing them. I went the 2K clear coat route using SprayMax 2K Headlight Clear.
Process was:
- Wet sanded with 600 grit
- Then 800 grit
- Finish with 1000 grit
- Cleaned and prep surface
- Spray 3 coats total
- 1 light tack coat
- 2 medium-wet coats
I know some people go up to 1500/2000/3000 or even polishing them before clear, but from what I read, stopping at 800-1000 grit gives the clear enough bite to stick on properly. The lenses looked super frostly after sanding, which is nerve-racking, but trust the process.
There is a little bit of orange peel in the clear (my first time spraying 2k so it might be my technique) but overall I'm pretty happy with how they came out for a DIY job.
Going to let them fully cure before deciding whether to wet sand and polish them later. If anyone has done this before, please leave any recommendations.
