Advice on Workbench Top Material

Hi! I posted a similar question in the pottery subreddit and did really get any advice. My husband recommended posting here.

I am looking to build a workbench to be used for wedging clay for pottery. I’m trying to figure out the best type of wood to use for the top. From what I can tell, plywood might work but my husband had concerns about warping once it was screwed down. We had thought about butcher block but not sure if that would go well.

I know this is a very niche request but not sure if anyone had experience or advice.

Thanks so much!!

Wedging table

Hello! I have a small “studio” in my basement - wheel, kiln in an adjoining cold storage room, plenty of shelves, etc. I’m about a year into pottery.

I am currently using a wedging board from Amazon on top of a chest freezer and it is not working well for me. I’m hoping to get a better workbench with a large top i can also wedge on (ideally with storage underneath/on top. What material would you recommend using as the top? Based on what I want, I think a custom build will be the most affordable option 😂

I’ve seen some people like plaster but I feel like that’s above my comfort zone. I’d considered butcher block and I’ve seen others mention plywood but I worry about warping. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much!!!
