TSP to survivor: to roll over or not

Hi, my dad passed away, leaving his TSP to my mom. She is over 73z My understanding is that if we accept the survivor TSP, when she passes, the children will have to immediately withdraw, creating a 1 time big taxable event at our personal income tax level.

However, if we open her up a traditional IRA and she rolls it over, then we would have 10 years to withdraw. She would also have to start taking required minimum distributions.

In any event, her income tax level is going to be much much less than ours. So I am leaning towards converting to IRA and start withdrawal in g at her lower tax bracket.

Can anyone else confirm/correct my interpretation?

Atropine vs Stellis

Hi,
My 6 y/o son was recommended to start treatment with atropine eye drops or Stellis lenses. He was 0- 5 months ago and is now -0.25. The doctor said he would do monotherapy with either, but was pushing the drops more because of compliance rate with glasses in kids.

I have gone back and forth and wondering if anyone has perspective.

My son had a corneal tear and I absolutely could not get the eye drops in. I felt like I was torturing him. He is also sensitive to getting his ears examined and has to be held down for the exam and for shots. I’m told eye drops can be put in when sleeping, but I’m concerned that he sleeps under the covers and how much/accurate we would even get in. Also, while I’m told most kids adapt, my child has fought pretty much everything and is strong willed. Plus the eye drops in the US are made by compounding pharmacies because they aren’t FDA approved and there can obviously be issues.

On the flip side, I hate for him to have to wear glasses all the time and who knows if he will. He verbally says he will, but he’s 6. But from what I’m being told, that’s pretty much inevitable anyways, they predict he will still be moderately myopic even with treatment. So, realistically are we really only saving like a year or so without glasses?

We are leaning towards the glasses because I really don’t want to torture him and don’t know if I can get them in while he sleeps. Plus he will probably need glasses anyways at some point in the next couple years.

Survivor - Paying premiums in interim

Hi, is anyone able to help clarify because I’ve heard 2 conflicting things from OPM about my mom and getting benefits after my dad recently passed.
I immediately reported the death online, called a week later and confirmed they are aware. We filled out the form and sent already to try and speed up the process.

What I am confused about is the payment of premium since there are no more pension checks starting in June until the survivor annuity is processed. Everything came out of my dad’s pension so June premiums won’t be paid.

The rep who I confirmed the death was reported told me that medical benefits are fine not to be paid in the interim, she will still have them and they will retroactively go back and adjust to self plan/take from my mom’s pension. However she said my mom needs to set up payment for dental/vision from another account or else they could be cancelled due to nonpayment and she would be without until the survivor benefits are processed (which takes months). She said to call OPM benefits but was concerned they may say no payment change can be made bc there is no CS-F number assigned to my mom yet.

My mom called OPM benefits twice. One person said not to worry about dental or vision either, it will all be in the packet. The next person said she will get something in the mail in 10 days. Well, it’s been more than 10 days since we reported the death and everything I’ve heard indicates that paperwork will take months.

Any idea on whether payments need set up to dental/vision and how to do it? Do we call dental/vision directly and see if she can set up payment through them?

Also, can anyone confirm that she doesn’t need to pay medical in the interim?

Deceased account holder- transfer

We have a grandfathered plan and the account holder died. I’m an account manager.

Are we able to transfer the account to me? Can we keep the username/email of the deceased account holder? It has been the family email for over 30 years.

Once we transfer the account, will they make us change our plan that is grandfathered?

Preparing small children for death

Hi, I’m not sure how much longer my dad has. He is increasingly somnolent and has leptomeningeal spread. He has no big lesions, but it’s in the CSF and he is bedbound. I am not sure how long we have or that we can do anything more. I’m not sure if we will attempt Avastin.

My kids are 6 and 2. My oldest knows my dad is sick and is a very sensitive, smart kid. He prays for my dad every night. He wants him to come out to his birthday party and he obviously can’t.

He finishes kindergarten in a few weeks and then we have vacation.

I took him back to visit a week and half ago. We will go again at least 1-2 more times before our vacation.

Do I tell him that my dad is going to die? Do I wait until after vacation in a month and hope my dad holds on?

Any advice?
