Overwhelming bass when viewing The Odyssey at the BFI's IMAX
On Monday, I saw The Odyssey at an IMAX 70mm screening at the BFI, and I'm afraid I found the heaviness of the bass detracted from my viewing experience. It felt very excessive.
It made sense in certain scenes, like when Polyphemus screams in the cave, but not for the most part. For example, when the waves crashed against the boat during a storm, it didn't sound to me like crashing waves, but like immense subwoofer booming.
This happened so frequently throughout the film that I found it masked the soundtrack and occasionally the dialogue.
Actually, the only part I remember finding particularly pleasing audio-wise was when the track Odysseus played towards the end; the scene had quieter dynamics, and a lack of sound effects to cover the soundtrack. (I think it was when Odysseus returned to Ithaca, before he fought the suitors).
I had the same issue with the preview for Dune: Part Three that was shown directly before the movie, so it presumably concerns the IMAX's sound system rather than Nolan's mixing.
I also didn't find the image to be much sharper than that of a standard cinema screen – I'd never been to an IMAX screening before, and expected to notice a huge difference in the resolution.
I think I'd have much preferred to have seen it at a standard cinema.
Did anyone else who viewed The Odyssey at the IMAX have a similar experience?
