Growing pawpaw in Japan: one fruit survived

My Japanese pawpaw cultivar Hoju decided it can only support ONE fruit this year 😄

This is the first fruit set on this young tree!!

The area where I’m growing pawpaws used to be rice fields.Because rice is grown in flooded fields, the native soil here is heavy clay with poor drainage. I’ve been trying to improve it with organic matter and cover crops.

So I’m honestly just happy one survived😀

Container-grown pawpaws in Japan

I grow pawpaws in containers too, because my planting area isn’t ready yet.
I place them near a Japanese garden my father built, which helps protect them from the intense summer sun.
