Back for 1 Month, Light Applications, here are the numbers:

Just making a small post to share some numbers for anyone wondering what's the current health of the Malaysian job market. For some context, I am an overseas graduate with 3 years of overseas work experience in various fields across different industries in sales. I graduated with a major in marketing from a decent university.

After coming back to Malaysia, I did some light amount of applications as I was pretty busy just moving back, setting back up shop, and actively working on my own side project. I am primarily looking at IT Sales or B2B Sales, though I would prefer to stay in the IT or technology sphere of things. Here are my stats.

I have made about:

  • 70 Job applications
  • Heard back from about 50% of them
  • Most of them were rejections; however, I was gunning for a salary range of 5-7k
  • I had gotten 5 callback interviews
  • Out of the 5, 1 did not disclose that Chinese was the primary language of communication and writing, which I declined instantly because my Chinese isn't that good
  • Another company felt.... off, which was a blessing in disguise when they said I didn't make it to the second round
  • Currently waiting for a reply from one company, for which I made it to the 3rd round. It's been about a week, but my recruiter told me that she has been chasing for a reply, and should hear back from them soon. This job does pay well above my salary range

Coming from Australia, I would have never had imagine to get this amount of engagement in such a short period of time. I went through a drought of no replies or interviews over a course of 4 months in Australia, applying all over the seniority chain. To anyone looking for a new job, good luck. Wish me luck for my interview as well.
