Alternatives to turf?

Alternatives to turf?

Hi all,

We want to add some greenery to this space and also make it usable for the little one we are expecting next month. I initially wanted to put sod down, but this area gets a lot of shade (particularly from the tree and the hedges on the left). I’m concerned that the grass would die, or at the very least look spotty and be difficult to maintain.

Turf seemed like a much simpler option, but I don’t love that it may get very hot since we have a dog who runs around back there. Also not a fan of the negative impact it has on the environment.

So, is there any other option we should look into? Thanks!

Best route from Huntsville, AL to Savannah, GA?

Hi all,

We will be driving from Huntsville to Savannah on July 13th. The most direct route passes through Atlanta, which we do not have a ton of interest in stopping in on the way. I also just realized that the World Cup semifinal will be on July 15th in Atlanta...not sure how that will impact traffic.

Any suggestions for alternate routes that bypass Atlanta but don't add too much driving time?

Rental insurance for 38 day trip

Hi all, I am going on a cross-country road trip in July and the plan was to go for 38 days and rent a car for the entire trip. I was hoping to leverage the rental car protection through my CSR, but just found out it's limited to 31 days.

Given that I'm driving across the country, I cannot break up the contract mid-trip (1-way rentals are obscenely expensive).

Any ideas/suggestions on how to proceed from here? Is my only option to squeeze the trip into 31 days and shave off a week? Or purchase the insurance through the rental company?

How to get the most out of an upcoming car rental for cross country road trip?

Hi all,

My wife, our 85-lb dog, and I are planning a 5-week cross-country road trip this summer (early July to August) from LA to Philadelphia and back.

The dog will get the 2nd row (with a hammock). Because of dog supplies and luggage, we need the 3rd row to fold completely flat, giving us at least 40–45+ cubic feet of trunk space.
We currently have a dual-booking strategy for Thursday, July 2nd at LAX:

  • 7:00 PM: National Emerald Club Executive Aisle (midsize rental, so much cheaper but a gamble on availability).
  • 8:00 PM: Hertz backup rental. Deciding between a Nissan Pathfinder (FWD), Hyundai Santa Fe (AWD, same price as Pathfinder**)**, or paying $700 extra to lock in a Volvo XC90 Hybrid. Of course, none of these vehicles are guaranteed, it's just the class of rental.

We live locally and have total flexibility on when and where we pick up. Looking for advice on three quick logistics questions:

  1. LAX vs. Burbank (BUR): Does Burbank's National/Hertz inventory even compare for large SUVs, or is sticking to the massive hub at LAX safer to guarantee a big car?
  2. The Pre-Holiday Timing: Is Thursday evening right before the 4th of July weekend a recipe for an empty lot? Would it make more sense to pick up the car earlier in the week (Tuesday or Wednesday) to get the best pick before it's cleared out?
  3. The Vehicle Dilemma: How do the flat-folding floors and actual trunk depth compare between the Pathfinder and the Santa Fe? Is the comfort of the Volvo XC90 genuinely worth a $700 price bump for a month-long marathon?

Sorry for the long post. Thanks for any insights!

Advice for trip from LA to Philadelphia (and back)?

Hi all,

My wife and I are planning a 4 week road trip from LA to Philadelphia and back with our dog and were wondering if you have any advice/suggestions on where we should go.

We have two rough draft routes so far (one for the way there, and another for the way back). The only criteria are:

  • We want to see the southern states (but not New Orleans.. we have both been there)
  • Our final destination is Philadelphia
  • We want to stop in Champaign, IL for a couple of days to visit family
  • We don't want to unnecessarily add a ton of driving time if can avoid it

Our primary interests are:

  • Exploring new cities/towns and taking in sights/cultures of different states
  • Local hidden gems
  • Food
  • National parks (that allow dogs)

To Philadelphia (2 weeks): https://imgur.com/a/S5us5aR

To LA (2 weeks): https://imgur.com/a/Nr52HJO

Hope to hear your thoughts. We appreciate your help!
