One of our Discord members shared this news with us, so I thought I'd bring it over here too! 👀
China has released a new set of regulations for micro short dramas, and there's quite a lot to unpack. So I went through the new rules and put together a simpler breakdown of the parts that I think are most relevant to us as short-drama viewers.
China's National Radio and Television Administration (NRTA) has issued a new 《微短****剧发展管理办法》 (Administrative Measures for the Development of Micro-Short Dramas).
It was approved on July 27, 2026, officially issued on July 30, and published by the NRTA on July 31. The new rules will take effect on September 1, 2026.
There are 54 articles in the full regulation 😭 so I went through them and picked out the parts that might actually matter to us as viewers.
Here's what the new rules say 👇
The new rules define a micro-drama as a series where:
And the rules apply pretty broadly.
They cover micro-dramas distributed through websites, apps, distribution platforms, TV channels, IPTV, internet TV, cable TV, etc.
They also cover different viewing devices, including phones, tablets, computers, TVs, public electronic screens, wearable devices and even vehicle-mounted devices.
So basically, it's not just “those dramas you watch on an app.” 👀
This is probably one of the biggest things to understand.
These are:
The regulation specifically mentions areas such as politics, military affairs, diplomacy, national security, ethnic affairs, religion, judicial affairs and public security.
These have the strictest requirements.
These are generally:
Category 2 dramas can follow a filing/publicity system similar to Category 1, with provincial authorities able to establish the specific implementation rules.
These are:
Category 3 doesn't use the same licensing system as Categories 1 and 2. Instead, qualified broadcasting platforms/organizations are responsible for reviewing them before release and assigning a program number.
So no, this does not simply mean:
There are different requirements depending on which category the drama falls into.
For Category 1, the production has to go through filing/publicity before filming and production.
After the drama is completed, Category 1 and Category 2 dramas must go through content review before broadcasting.
Category 1 receives a:
《微短****剧发行许可证》 — Micro-Short Drama Distribution License
Category 2 receives an:
Approval document
Category 3 is reviewed by the qualified broadcaster before release and must be assigned a program number.
And here's an interesting part:
For Category 1 dramas, the production must follow the filed content.
If major things such as the main character positioning or the overall direction of the story are changed, the production has to go through the filing process again.
Even changing the title or production company requires the relevant changes to be reported.
The regulation has a fairly long list of prohibited content.
In simple terms, micro-dramas cannot contain things such as:
❌ Content violating laws or regulations
❌ Content threatening national security or national unity
❌ Terrorism or extremism
❌ Harmful content involving minors
❌ Insults, defamation or violations of someone's privacy
❌ Pornography, gambling or drug promotion
❌ Discrimination
❌ Harmful superstition/religious-related prohibited content
❌ Serious misinformation
❌ Glorification or promotion of violence
❌ Encouraging crime or teaching people how to commit crimes
❌ Other content considered harmful to public order or social morality
There are also specific requirements concerning things such as traditional culture, historical narratives and revolutionary culture.
So the regulation isn't just about licensing.
There are also actual content standards that productions have to follow.
This one might actually be noticeable to viewers.
Micro-dramas are required to follow China's national standards for language and writing.
The regulation specifically says:
So if you're watching a drama that uses a lot of English or other foreign-language content, don't be surprised if you see Chinese subtitles added.
The opening of a micro-drama is supposed to prominently display information such as:
📌 Drama title
📌 License number
📌 Approval document number
📌 Program number
The exact information shown depends on the category.
There are also requirements for creator credits.
Writers, directors and other relevant personnel must have their credits prominently displayed in either the opening of the first episode or the ending credits of the final episode.
So that little number you sometimes see at the beginning of a Chinese short drama?
👀 Yeah… it's actually part of the regulatory system.
This one definitely caught my attention.
If AI technology is used to generate or produce a micro-drama, the production and broadcasting parties have to follow the relevant national regulations.
And they must add a clear AI notice in a prominent position in every episode.
So
AI-generated drama ≠ No rules
🤖 = still regulated.
This is probably one of the more interesting parts for people who watch Chinese dramas outside China.
The regulation says China will
🌎 Support overseas-oriented micro-drama production
🌎 Support overseas distribution
🌎 Facilitate foreign creators participating in production under the relevant rules
🌎 Support good micro-dramas being released in China and overseas at the same time
BUT there is an important detail.
The regulation specifically says that
So
🌎 “It's made for foreign viewers.”
does not automatically mean
🚫 “It doesn't need to follow the rules.”
This could be pretty important for people who watch dramas on different apps and websites.
Platforms/broadcasters are expected to:
✅ Verify the license or approval for Category 1 & 2 dramas
✅ Review Category 3 dramas before release
✅ Monitor and manage key accounts distributing micro-dramas
✅ Conduct regular content inspections
✅ Have systems for dealing with problematic content
✅ Remove or stop broadcasting content when serious violations are discovered
✅ Prioritize quality micro-dramas
And there's also an interesting rule about recommendation algorithms.
Platforms cannot use algorithms designed to encourage users to become addicted or spend excessively.
They also have to regularly review and evaluate their algorithm systems.
There's another part that caught my attention.
The regulation also mentions very short, non-professionally produced online audiovisual content that has micro-drama characteristics.
Platforms are expected to have content-management and safety measures for this type of content too. So the rules aren't necessarily limited to the polished commercial dramas produced by established companies.
The regulation explicitly states that intellectual property rights related to micro-dramas are protected by law.
It also says people and organizations involved in micro-drama production should strengthen their awareness and ability to create, use, manage and protect intellectual property.
So copyright protection is now explicitly included as part of the overall micro-drama regulatory framework.
The regulation includes consequences for violations.
Depending on the situation, authorities can require a production to:
⚠️ Make corrections
⏸️ Suspend content updates
🛑 Stop broadcasting
🚫 Stop distribution or promotion
🚫 Stop participation in awards/evaluations
🚫 In certain cases, stop participation in international exchanges
And Article 46 specifically says that certain violations can result in a fine of up to RMB 100,000.
This includes situations such as:
So the rules aren't just recommendations.
There are actual enforcement mechanisms behind them.
The easiest way to look at it is
Chinese micro-dramas are getting a much more formal regulatory framework.
There are now:
📌 3 official categories
📌 Different filing/review systems
📌 Licensing and approval requirements
📌 Specific content standards
📌 Rules for titles, dialogue and subtitles
📌 AI-content labelling
📌 More responsibility for platforms
📌 Algorithm requirements
📌 Copyright protection
📌 Rules covering overseas distribution
📌 Actual penalties for certain violations
But this doesn't necessarily mean:
A large part of the regulation is about creating a formal framework for the industry, defining different levels of management, and making both production companies and broadcasting platforms responsible for what they release.
And there are also sections that actively encourage innovation, international cooperation and overseas distribution.
The new measures officially take effect on:
So it'll be interesting to see how much of this we actually notice in the short dramas released after September 1. 👀🍿
Will we start seeing more obvious license and program numbers?
Will AI-generated dramas suddenly have labels? 🤖
And most importantly…
will these new rules actually lead to better produced short dramas and better stories? 👀

A little note: This is only a simplified summary of the new regulations for discussion. I didn't translate the Law Article word for word, and I've only highlighted selected points from each section rather than covering every single requirement.

Ma Xiaoyu & Voice of Youth (Ran Qing Team) Win Gold at the World Choir Games! 🏆🎶
Huge congratulations to Ma Xiaoyu and the entire Ran Qing team on this incredible achievement at the 14th World Choir Games 2026! 🎉🏆❤️
They headed to Helsingborg, Sweden on August 7 to compete, and just a few days later, on August 10, they took home Gold in the C16 Pop Ensembles category with an amazing 90.17 points! 🎶✨
What makes this even more special is how this team came together. Ran Qing was formed through the variety show Voice Of Youth (超燃青春的合唱). The show wrapped up in June, but the team didn't just go their separate ways. They continued practicing and preparing for the competition together even after the show ended.
From struggling through rehearsals on the show, slowly finding their rhythm, to travelling all the way to Sweden and finally standing on an international stage together... ❤️
Honestly, who would have thought a group that started from a variety show would actually make it this far? They really turned what started as a fun project into something amazing.
Congratulations again to Ma Xiaoyu and Ran Qing Team! What an incredible achievement and such a cool memory for the whole team! 🏆❤️

I actually knew about this back in April. At the time, I only watched a few mins of her livestream and thought she was just filming something at wrap shop😂
Then a few months later, this video came out and I finally realized… she actually opened her own shop
I'm kinda surprised this didn't get talked about more. I remember sharing the news after someone in Discord mentioned another actor who had started selling vegetables months back.
From what she said, opening a snack shop had been something she'd wanted to do for 3–4 years. She's already acted in 50+ short dramas, and she said she can use the money she earns from acting to invest in something she enjoys❤️
And she's still filming short dramas too! Whenever she finishes filming, she rushes back to Hangzhou to help take care of the shop. The shop is mainly run by her sister and the staff, but whenever she has free time, she also gets in the kitchen and cooks herself
They sell all kinds of snacks, including handmade wontons, fried chicken, salt andbpepper tofu, and handmade wraps
Instead of being pampered by a CEO, she's out here becoming her own boss 😂💕
Honestly, I think it's great that she has something of her own outside of acting. Short drama work can be unpredictable, especially with all the changes happening in the industry and the growing use of AI, so having another source of income is definitely a smart move.
Her shop is Longzai Snacks (龙崽小吃) 📍 Hangzhou
Also, there's actually another short drama actor doing something similar and running their own food stall. I shared the news about them in Discord a few months back too. I'll share it here as well once I have time to look into it more .
It does make me wonder, though… if news like this isn't widely known, there are probably more short drama actors doing something similar that we just haven't heard about yet

A month ago, I shared a list on Discord of short drama actors who were rumored to be joining this show, including Zhang Chi, Yao Guanyu, and Zeng Hui. But now that the official lineup has been announced, it looks like only Zeng Hui will be joining the variety show.
Little bit about the Variety Show
MangoTV’s hit variety show Call Me By Fire 2026 has officially announced its 28 member lineup, bringing together singers, actors, rappers, musical performers, and idols from different generations and backgrounds.
But this season comes with a pretty big change, no autotune, no vocal tuning, and no hiding behind post-production👀
Following the live-singing format of Sisters Who Make Waves 2026, they will perform with open mics and live vocals, giving audiences a more unfiltered look at what they can actually do on stage🎤🔥
And singing isn't the only thing they'll have to worry about. The show is also introducing physical fitness challenges, with strength and endurance tests that can affect their ability to choose songs. So they'll have to prove themselves both physically and vocally.
The lineup is packed with familiar faces, including singers Sun Nan, Ayanga, Man Jiang, actors Wang Chuanjun, Cao Jun, Zhang Binbin, rapper Wang Yitai, and idols Tang Jiuzhou, Yao Chen, Mika, among many others.
And yes, Zeng Hui is also joining this season! 🔥
With live vocals, physical challenges, and less reliance on post-production, this season looks like it's going to be much more about what they can actually deliver on stage.
Now I'm really curious to see how Zeng Hui will do👀🔥
