Postop Hyperthyroidism
I’m a 41 yr old female, 10 days postop. I went into surgery expecting to have one gland removed and woke up with three and a half gone. My recovery was going great for about a week. Tuesday night I started to feel very irritable and was unable to sleep. On Wednesday afternoon I had some tingling in my feet and around my mouth. I started to feel dizzy and when I got home I called my surgeon to see if I needed to take more calcium. He insisted I got to the ED to get some bloodwork and could get IV calcium if needed. My calcium was perfectly normal but my TSH was undetectable. I’ve been on levothyroxine for years for hypothyroidism and my dose hasn’t changed in at least 10 years. I know that sometimes the thyroid gland can become irritated from being handled, especially in cases where more exploration is needed. I have an appointment with my primary doctor on Monday and I’m not terribly worried but I don’t feel very well.
Has anyone experienced problems with their thyroid after surgery? If so, did they resolve on their own and is there anything you did to help with the symptoms. I’m trying to stay very hydrated but it seems like I just lose the extra water sweating in my sleep and going to the bathroom. I was excited that my recovery was going so well and now I feel a little disappointed
