Does anyone else get weirdly attached to side characters who barely get page time

I just finished a book where the main romance was fine, like totally serviceable, but there was this guard character who showed up maybe three times and I cannot stop thinking about him. He had one line where he joked about hating morning patrol and I was like okay this guy needs his own spin-off immediately.

Meanwhile the actual love interest was doing all the brooding and dramatic declarations and I was just... waiting for the guard to come back. He never did. I'm lowkey devastated.

This happens to me way too often and I don't know if it's because I'm reading too much into background characters or if authors are accidentally making them more interesting than the mains. Like there was another book where the protagonist's brother's best friend was mentioned in passing as someone who collected old maps and I spent the rest of the story wondering about his entire life.

I think part of it is that when you only get a glimpse of someone they feel more mysterious? But also sometimes the main couple's drama gets exhausting and I just want to hang out with the side character who seems like they have their life together. Or at least a sense of humor.

Anyone else do this or am I just making up entire storylines for people who exist for like two paragraphs.
