potholes shower thought
I find that anytime somebody complains about chronic potholes, recurring patch jobs, and growing maintenance backlogs on the roads, it's not necessarily because it's a sign of a failed government to fix public infrastructure, but rather a symptom that mandatory car-dependent sprawl is fiscally unsustainable (the sprawl ponzi scheme). But they'll never understand the connection without confronting an uncomfortable truth, and I don't want to get in an awkward extended conversation with acquaintances, coworkers, or even worse -- internet strangers -- so I usually don't really say anything and just shrug.
