Western involving train robbery and gang hide out
Hi, I'm looking for the title of a western. I can't name any of the actors, but I can summarize the plot pretty well. A clean-shaven man arrives at a train station carrying money intended as an advance year’s salary for a schoolteacher. Law enforcement officers at the station seem to recognize him, and he appears nervous and uncomfortable, especially around the train, as if he is not used to traveling by rail.
On the train he meets:
- a middle-aged trickster/gambler/card-cheater type character, slightly comic but sympathetic,
- and a woman (“the dame”), whom the trickster already seems to know.
Something happens during or after a robbery, and the three of them end up falling or being forced off the train together. The trickster injures his leg and limps afterward.
The three walk along the railway tracks through green countryside until they find an old shack. The hero recognizes it as the former hideout of an outlaw gang from his past. The gang is there again.
The gang leader is an older, rough, tramp-like man who apparently raised the hero from childhood and still treats him as if he belongs to the gang. The gang leader believes the hero has returned to rejoin them.
Inside the gang hideout there is a disturbing scene where the woman is forced to strip while gang members hold a knife to the hero’s throat. The trickster companion is treated badly by the gang members.
The gang is planning a major robbery — “the big one” — involving a bank in a town up in the hills. The gang leader sends the hero along with two gang members to scout the town ahead of the robbery.
As they travel, the landscape becomes much drier, rocky, and barren. When they arrive, they discover the town is mostly abandoned. The bank is not functioning normally and the only apparent inhabitants are a Mexican couple.
While the men are away or distracted, one of the gang members kills the Mexican woman. When her husband returns and discovers her dead, violence erupts into a shootout.
During this shootout:
- the hero turns against the gang members,
- and at one point hides underneath the floorboards/veranda of a building and shoots upward through the floor to kill one of them.
The remaining gang members later arrive in town and are killed as the conflict escalates.
Finally, the hero rides back to confront the old gang leader in the hills. When he arrives, the gang leader is assaulting or attempting to rape the woman from earlier. The hero fights him and ultimately wins.
