What is wrong with NSBM . Academic Freedom Left
One of my colleagues works as a senior lecturer at NSBM Green University in Sri Lanka, and from what I've heard, the working stress there is honestly too much for the academic staff. Apparently, lecturers have to handle a lot of extra work beyond their actual academic duties — admin stuff, event coordination, and other random tasks — and it's directly affecting the quality of what they deliver in the classroom. On top of that, it seems like they barely get to take any proper leave.
I'm honestly not sure how Sri Lankan labour law even works in this context. Can universities just keep academics working non-stop without giving them their entitled leave? Is this actually legal, or is it just being normalized because nobody pushes back?
Also, is this an NSBM-specific thing, or is it the same at SLIIT and other private universities here? Would really appreciate hearing from anyone working in academia in Sri Lanka — is this just how the system works now, or is my colleague's situation unusual?
