Can't we bring this to Sri Lanka?

I mean, really, can't we ask Dr. Harini to implement a rule like this?

Edit : Since we all agree that the hair rules should change is there a way to acually make it happen, for real this time does anyone know any legal steps we can take or whatever we can do ??

Did you get proper sex education in school?

I went to a boys school and we had a female teacher for every year we had that topic. And every time we were given a reading assignment while they had to go to 'the office' for something urgent. Now I am studying Maths for ALs, I don't think I am educated on that topic at all

Review of Sri Lanka as a tourist

Hey guys spent a week in Sri Lanka and here are my thoughts on it.

Before I travel anywhere, I usually look up the subreddit to get a vibe of the country. I came in expecting pretty bad food tbh; idk why y'all seem to really dislike your own food because I was actually pleasantly surprised. I didn't have a single bad meal while I was here. I ate at restaurants in Colombo and ordered a couple of meals through PickMe. Food in Colombo was pretty amazing actually and affordable too.

The only critique I have is that the portion sizes here are kinda overwhelming. Despite really liking the food, I actually couldn't finish most of it. It's the rice. Y'all have too much rice. I started ordering only one dish per restaurant because I anticipated that me and my bf can't finish the food.

More good things on Colombo. Your city is actually quite walkable. I'm a bit iffy on the public transport but it felt somewhat safe actually to go on foot, which is usually not the case in most developing countries. The footpaths are wide and the motorcycles don't try to hog the pedestrian lanes. Riding the tuktuk is a bit scary but otherwise it's a controlled chaos. Kinda reminds me of Vietnam actually.

I also spent a couple of days in Galle. I think Galle is definitely quite pretty but it's very touristy. It costs way more to be in Galle tho, and I would say the food here is less unique to Sri Lanka and more westernized. I went to the museum here and I think there should be more information on the historical aspect of the forts. There were only historical artifacts without any context regarding them.

Oh yea and since I'm typing this from the airport, it's weird that the prices are in USD.

How do you deal with friends or family who borrow money and never pay it back?

I have a question, and I'm curious how other people deal with this.

Over the years, I've had quite a few friends and relatives borrow money from me and then "forget" to pay it back.

Because of so many bad experiences, I stopped lending money a few years ago. I even lost some friends because of it, but looking back, maybe those friendships were based more on what they could get from me than genuine friendship. These days, I would only lend money to one or two people that I completely trust.

Another reason I'm careful is that I've also experienced times when I needed money myself. Looking back, I often thought, "I wish I still had the money I lent out."and value of the money.

Now I'm in a similar situation again. More than a year ago, I helped one of my relatives by paying some of their visa-related expenses. I never like asking people to repay me because it feels awkward. I usually think, "I helped them when they needed it, so if I ever need help, they'll do the same for me." Unfortunately, that hasn't been my experience.

So I'm wondering:

  • How do you handle lending money to friends or family?
  • Do you have a rule, like never lending money unless you're okay with never seeing it again?
  • If someone doesn't pay you back, do you remind them, or do you just consider it a lesson learned?
  • How do you avoid damaging relationships while still protecting yourself financially?

I'd really like to hear how others deal with situations like this.

How much does a basic business website actually cost in Sri Lanka right now? (Getting wild quotes)

I run a small local business here in SL and I’m finally looking to get a proper webpage set up for it. The problem is, I have absolutely no tech background and I’m completely lost on the pricing.

I’ve asked around a bit and the quotes I'm getting are all over the place—some people are quoting pocket change, and others are asking for an arm and a leg.

Can anyone break down how developers or agencies usually charge here?

What’s a realistic price range for a standard, clean business website (just info, contact page, maybe a portfolio—no heavy e-commerce stuff yet)?

What should I look out for so I don’t get ripped off?

Do people usually charge a flat rate or monthly maintenance?

I worked as a Business Analyst and a Product Manager in Sri Lanka for nearly 18 years. AMA.

Pretty much the title; I started working in the IT industry in 2006 and for 18 years of that I've been a Business Analyst and a Product Manager.

I will answer any question related to the field in general and about specific opinions I have. I cannot go into opinions about named companies or people, or specific details about salaries and interview questions. Within those boundaries, ask me anything.

Cars vs Houses in Sri Lanka

I just wanted to talk about something I have noticed in Sri Lanka from personal experience. I have noticed that a lot of people seem to spend more money on buying multiple cars rather than bigger houses. I have often seen people living in single-story houses in Sri Lanka while having multiple high-end cars.

For example, most recently, one of my father's friends I saw recently had a Land Rover Defender (2022) and a BMW 7 Series (2018) but lived in a small, single-story old house, and another person my father knew also had a Toyota Prado (2015), a Toyota Land Cruiser 200 Sahara, and a BMW 740le (2018) but also lived in a small, single-story house, and another person from my father's batch also had 5 cars; he had a Toyota Land Cruiser 300 Sahara ZX, a Land Rover Range Rover Autobiography (2019), a Mercedes-Benz S Class (2015), a BMW i8 (2016), and a Land Rover Defender (2012) and yet lived in a single-story house.

None of these houses were like these grand British colonial Walauwa's or anything; they were somewhat medium-sized, single-story houses, not modern or newly built or refurbished or anything. I was just wondering if I was alone in noticing such behavior or if this is something common in Sri Lanka, where people focus on acquiring a luxury car or multiple cars for show rather than building or buying a bigger house.

I am interested to hear another person's thoughts and experiences. Also just to clarify, I have seen and noticed more than 3 people like this. I just didn't want to list or mention them all, because I didn't want the post to get repetitive and too long.

What to do as a 21 Y/O visiting Kandy for a few days?

Hey guys, I'm a 21M from Colombo, planning on visiting kandy for a few days (maybe 2 nights) with a couple of friends, and I was wondering what i can do over there.
Planning on staying right at the city center.
What places can I visit? And I where can we properly socialize with similar aged Kandyans? Any ideas on what kinda things to do or events to look out for? Planning on going sometime in july/ early august the latest. Give me all the details whether it be cafes/social clubs/events/ nightlife or even good camping, hiking spots, lesser known local attractions near the city.

Also does anyone know a reliable place to rent out some bikes or scooters or a car as a local without any major hassle? (even electric bicycles are alright)

A side ques: what do the uni students of the several local unis in the area do for fun? any social events from these unis coming up (pera/sliit etc) in July /August?

Feel free to suggest things that I haven't mentioned up in the description. Thanks!

Burning garbage openly is actually illegal in Sri Lanka

A while back I had a running issue with a couple of my neibhors over garbage burning. It wasn't just garbage but all sorts of crap from tree leaves to wires. Once he burnt an old sofa too. I've been to the Police twice regarding this and someone in a different thread asked me a few questions that prompted me to write this.

Turns out there's an actual legal basis for reporting this. Per Gazette Extraordinary No. 2034/36, issued 01.09.2017,(Gazzette) under the National Environmental Act: "No person shall open burn garbage." Non-compliance is punishable under Section 31 of the National Environmental Act No. 47 of 1980.(S31 of NEA No 47 of 1980)

What actually works (from experience):

  1. Talk to your neighbors first and try to sort it out amicably. This step matters if it escalates.
  2. If that fails, take photo/video evidence of the burning.
  3. Go to your local police station or call 119. The Environmental Police can file this under public nuisance / the above provisions.
  4. Once police get involved and a court date is issued, most people take it seriously fast. Fines in my case were around Rs. 1,500 per person.

Hope this helps anyone dealing with the same headache.

To those who have a language degree

I always wondered what the students do after graduating with a arts bachelor's degree in languages...

Further studies?

Or working in the relevant field or in a completely different field that has nothing to do with the language you learned?

What language did you do?

Do you regret it?

Was the language itself enough or did you combine with something? If so like what?

What do you think about learning a language during this era of AI?

For context I'm talking about a degree without going to debt, completely free of charge in case of my country.

Sorry for my not so good English

I appreciate opinions from my home country as well as around the world so I'll be reposting to different communities.

Thank you for reading up to here.

Bouncing back financially

Is anyone here genuinely satisfied with their financial growth? Or maybe you lost it all and are in the middle of rebuilding?

I'd love to read your stories. Personally, I made some serious mistakes, hit rock bottom, and now I'm starting over from square one.
