Las Vegas family considering a move to Midland/Odessa — what is there to do with kids?
Hi everyone! My family and I are from Las Vegas and we’re seriously considering moving to the Midland/Odessa area for my husband’s work. We have two children (7 and 5), and one of my biggest concerns is making the transition easier for them.
I’m a nail tech, and my husband would likely be working as a CDL driver in the oilfield/energy industry. We also have a lot of family in the area, which is a huge positive for us, but I’m still nervous about the lifestyle change for our kids.
I’m fully aware that Midland/Odessa is a much smaller community than Las Vegas, and I’m not expecting it to have the same entertainment, restaurants, shopping, etc. 😂 I actually think we could really enjoy a slower pace of life. I’m just trying to get a realistic idea of what there is to do for a family.
For those who live there or have lived there:
What do you typically do for family entertainment?
Are there good movie theaters, shopping areas, restaurants, bowling, arcades, parks, etc.?
What kinds of activities are available for younger kids?
Are there places families tend to go on weekends?
Do you find yourself driving to other cities for entertainment?
What do you like most about raising a family there?
And honestly… what do you not like?
I know there will probably be some culture/lifestyle shock coming from Las Vegas, and I’m prepared for that. I’m more interested in hearing what everyday life is actually like for a family with young kids.
We’re not looking for a party scene or nightlife. I’m mostly wondering if there are enough little things to do — grabbing dinner, going to the movies, shopping, taking the kids somewhere fun, weekend activities, community events, etc. — to make us feel like we still have a life outside of work and home.
I’d really appreciate honest opinions, especially from people who moved there from a larger city. How was the adjustment for you and your kids?
