I updated my Win95 Solitaire clone with real-time Multiplayer, a functional MSN Messenger, and a 56k dial-up matchmaking tone.
Hey everyone,
A little while ago I builthttps://solitareonline.com/, a browser-based retro Solitaire platform wrapped in a fully interactive Windows 95 desktop environment (PWA enabled, background deal solver, local stat tracking).
Today, I just pushed a massive update that brings it into the early internet era: Real-Time Multiplayer.
Here is what’s new:
- Competitive Multiplayer: You can now test your card skills against other players in real-time.
- The Dial-Up Experience: To make the matchmaking authentic, the game actually plays the classic 56k dial-up modem tone while it searches for an opponent.
- MSN Messenger Clone: I built a functional in-game chat client styled exactly like the classic MSN Messenger so you can interact with the people you are playing against.
It was a fun challenge building out the real-time websocket infrastructure while keeping the UI strictly locked into that clunky, nostalgic 90s aesthetic.
The site currently supports Draw 1, Draw 3, Free Cell, Yukon and Spider Solitaire. I’d love for you guys to hop on, queue up for a multiplayer match, send a message in the MSN client, and let me know if you hit any bugs or latency issues!
