Socializing with support staff

Hello everyone! I hope it is OK to post here. I posted to the nurse practitioner sub and it was deleted by the mods, I’m not sure why 🙁. Hoping to get some advice from other APPs.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. I am a newer (less than a year) nurse practitioner working primary care in a smaller office for a large corporation. Previously an RN in the hospital setting for several years. What is considered appropriate in terms of outside hang outs with MAs and office staff?

When I was an RN everyone would frequently have different get togethers. In my new office there has been an informal Christmas happy hour or something like that here or there I have attended (and was the only provider that did😬)

Have now been invited to smaller get together non work related (at the house of my MA, but daytime and no alcohol ) where not everyone from work is invited and I would be the only provider invited. This is a newer world for me and I’m trying to navigate what is professional and appropriate? It doesn’t appear that there are any official non fraternization rules in this company, but I am hoping to work with this organization for many years and don’t want to inadvertently do something viewed as unprofessional.

Thank you for reading!!

Newer Nurse Practitioner seeks advice with MAs

Cancel international trip?

Thank you for taking the time to read this message. I am very new to this journey and it is changing day by day. I would be so grateful for opinions about our situation.

Father-in-law is 78 years old and had a routine colonoscopy second week of June. They found a couple areas of concern and they took biopsies. When he got home he started bleeding significantly and was admitted to the hospital. He has had some type of stable chronic lymphoma for about 10 years (I am uncertain of the details as he has been private about his health until now) and they think that contributed and the bleeding ultimately self resolved and he went home after about 3 days in the hospital.

Biopsy came back as adenocarcinoma. CT and MRI done end of June. They showed areas of concern on pancreas and liver in addition to the colon findings. ERCP second week of July with biopsies found that it is primary pancreatic cancer. PET scan and additional testing this week, and appointment tentatively scheduled for beginning of August to go over results and recommendations.

Some background information; despite his age he has been very active and mostly quite healthy. He did lose a beloved pet around the holidays and we noticed that he lost weight since then (and he already had no weight to lose he has always been a thin man) which we attributed to grief. Additionally he and my Mother-in-law went on a trip overseas for most of April and she told that he was expressing abdominal pain at that time. He seems to be declining much faster than we expected. He is skin and bones, and if he does eat even just a little bit, he spends A LOT of time in the restroom for hours afterwards seemingly in a lot of discomfort. He has also had a couple of very noticeable and very uncharacteristic cognitive lapses. He has expressed he does not wish to pursue treatment unless it gives him significantly more time and does not want to needlessly suffer in his last days.

Now to the issue at hand. We have a family reunion out of country for my family that has been planned for quite some time with family that are very difficult to get all in the same place. My parents have had some serious health issues, but overall they seem stable right now. We were supposed to leave this weekend and be gone for over a week. But seeing the rapid decline of my Father-in-law I am anxious about being multiple plane rides away in case things should suddenly take a turn. My in-laws are insisting that we take the trip and that it would be an overreaction to cancel. Am I overreacting? Or is it possible to pass this quickly after diagnosis? I am trying to balance everyone's wishes. I don't want to miss out on a special family trip that may not happen again, but also would never forgive myself if something happened to my Father-in-law and we were not here. For further context my husband's only sibling passed away so we are it.

What would you do? Thank you again so much for taking the time to read. It is so truly appreciated.

Hello!

Was wondering if anyone has used a structural engineer in the area that they recommend? We have a concerning crack on the side of our house (stair step crack) and our regular handyman suggested either a mason or structural engineer. Thank you!
