When did politicians start automatically touting the number of jobs a new initiative will bring to an area?
In America and the UK*, when an elected official, particularly a local one, announces any type of new initiative or development or program, they default to hyping the number of jobs that thing will bring. It could be anything from a new building project to tax incentives to a school and everything in between, they instinctively talk about how "X program will bring Y jobs to Z area." This seems to be a talking point regardless of the area's employment situation. When and why did this become commonplace?
*I specify the US and the UK bc those are the places I've lived and so I know this happens there. Not saying it's not also common elsewhere, just wanted to limit my observation to personal experience.
