How do drummers know what to play?

Singers, musicians all have a musical score to follow with notes and time. What do drummers have besides instinct, memory, timing and skill? How does one play the same way over and over. Does a song writer (say Bruce Springstee), "Hey Max, do whatever feels right to you"? How does a drummers play a new sing for the first time? A gong player seems easy. Hit the gong now. Now hit it again here. Same with other percussion instruments. How do these drummers do it?

I was at the Austin concert and again it was a fantastic show. It is hard to believe that he can go almost nonstop for almost 3 hours. He seemed truly exhausted by the end. Towards the end of the show when he does the , "You have just seen the ......E Street Band" it sounded to me that either he was talking in a much higher voice or it was a recording that was played at too fast a speed. Did I hear this correctly or are my ears the problem? My wife did not hear it as I did, but I am pretty sure that it sounded off. I don't know how he does it. I saw him four times in 2023/2024 and said the same thing then. So glad, I decided to see him at least one more time.
