This Week in Zoo News: ZooTampa’s $150M Plan, Three New Aquariums & an Incredible Ibis Migration

Each week, I dig through zoo and aquarium news from around the world and put together the most interesting stories I find in a weekly roundup called The Zoosletter.

A few of the stories from this week:

🦍 ZooTampa is moving forward with a $150 million master plan — Hillsborough County approved $75 million in funding that the zoo will match. Plans include a major new South America complex, expanded habitats and gorillas in Africa, and a reimagined Asia area with overhead pathways for orangutans and Malayan tigers.

🐠 Three new aquariums are in the works around the world — Bangkok is getting a 15,000-square-foot immersive aquarium, Mumbai’s Byculla Zoo is building an aquarium with two underwater tunnels, and an $85+ million aquarium and butterfly conservatory is proposed near Knott’s Berry Farm in Buena Park, California.

🐦 Northern bald ibises are following ultralight aircraft on a 1,550-mile migration — Thirty birds and their human caregivers are traveling from Central Europe to Cádiz, Spain, as part of an effort to restore the species and its historic migration routes in Europe.

🐋 Four belugas rescued from Marineland of Canada have died — The whales were among those relocated this summer after the closed marine park’s remaining animals faced the possibility of euthanasia.

🦁 There’s a renewed debate over the future of India’s historic Thiruvananthapuram Zoo — A proposal would move the 169-year-old zoo from its longtime home in the center of the city to a new facility on the outskirts.
