I knew it was going to be fucked up, but not this much. I must say I haven't seen a lot of psychological horror (my closest experience was reading misery), and there are so many things that makes it a masterpiece.
The first part of the movie was insane in what was shown and what was just meant. The characters really are evil, evil human. These scenes of rape and humiliation will haunt me for a while now.
The second part exists only due to the biggest coincidence possible, but I excuse it. What happens in the revenge part is almost as insane as in the first. Junior's suicide was really troubling, and as a man, I prefer not to talk about the bite scene. This movie is really good in choosing what to show and what not to show. It's a demonstration of Craven's genius.
The soundtrack was pure goId. As a 15 years old, this totally gave me 70s vibes. I love the contrast between what happens and the music. It's how this movie really mess up with your feelings and emotions. The quality of the image is pretty good too to give you disturbing feelings.
When I see this move got made two years before TCM and half less known, I think it's really unfair cause this movie is ten times better than any TCM movie, and ten times better than the large majority I've seen. A true masterpiece, that's all I've got to say.
Stephen King have always talked about some really disturbing concepts (everyone who read IT knows what I'm talking about). But I'm pretty sure there are concepts it seems he never dared or needed to use. As an exemple, the first I can't think of is incest (I may be wrong).
What are some disturbing ideas are you surprised King never wrote about?
