New DM for a group of kids – looking for adventure recommendations, tips, and advice
Hi everyone,
I’d like to become a Dungeon Master to introduce my children and one of my daughter’s friends to Dungeons & Dragons. I have a bit of experience as a player, but I’ve never run a game before, so this will be my first time behind the screen.
I’m looking for recommendations on beginner-friendly adventures, preferably something pre-written that will help me learn the ropes as a DM. If possible, I’d love something that can easily be adapted for younger players while still feeling like “real” D&D.
The kids definitely want to create their own characters. I’ve already found a simplified character sheet and plan to keep the rules fairly straightforward, but I’d still like to include character creation, roleplaying, exploration, and some exciting combat encounters.
I’m not just looking for adventure recommendations, though. I’d also appreciate any advice from experienced DMs:
What worked well when introducing children to D&D?
What would you simplify or change for younger players?
Are there any common mistakes I should avoid as a first-time DM?
How much preparation is actually necessary?
Any tips for keeping kids engaged and having fun?
I’d love to hear your experiences, recommendations, and any lessons you’ve learned along the way.
Thanks in advance!
