Trissa/ Naolin

I’m re-reading IF and just got to the part where Brennan tells Violet (who thinks he speaks Old Lucerish) that he doesn’t know Old Lucerish. As u/iiamuntuii picked up in this super-clever thread, Trissa gives him a long look when he says this. And we don’t learn a lot about Trissa, other than that she is quiet and great at runes.

The consensus in that thread and comments is that Trissa clocked that he was lying and kept it a secret for some reason. But WHAT IF Trissa is the reason that he lied, and the look was a pointed one, to make sure he didn’t tell?

There are many reasons this might be, including that Trissa and Brennan are somehow in cahoots together with the venin. u/objectivestaff3333 compiled some compelling evidence on that score in the comments, particularly that venin have, in recent years, apparently gotten both more tactical (brennan’s specialty) and skilled with runes (Trissa’s specialty).

I don’t fully think Brennan is a Venin or a Venin sympathizer. I do, however, agree with the consensus that there’s something sketchy about the Naolin backstory, Brennan’s “death” and the rune scar.

Could Trissa be related to Naolin, and somehow controlling Brennan (or trying to) in Naolin’s absence? Violet describes her as rather young, so age-wise she could be a sister or even some kind of reincarnation of Naolin…she’s not listed as one of the most powerful riders at Aretia in IF39, but it’s Brennan who reports the “calculations,” so maybe Trissa is trying to keep the extent of her power a secret…

As I said, I’m still in the midst of the re-read. Can you think of anything else that supports this theory? Debunks it? Tell me your thoughts! :)

Dain/Nolon/Varrish WHAT

We know from IF that Nolon is run ragged from mending—we assume this is because he’s mending Jack’s soul. But these lines seem to suggest that he is ALSO busy mending civilians that Dain is practicing his signet on???? What does this mean? Can Dain harm people with his signet? Can memories be mended? Will VIOLET’S memories be mended at the end of book 4?

I don’t think we’ve seen Dain use his signet since book one—it seems entirely possible it has morphed since then, especially in light of the often-quoted Sloane line about him having too much power.

Thought this was a typo, but maybe it means something…

In IF, six dragons visit the quadrant to scare the first years. Violet says “five belonging to the wingleaders” and Solas. But… aren’t there only four wingleaders? I went back to check FW and apparently eight dragons showed up. Any thoughts on what’s going on here? Is this yet another way that the dragons are decreasing their involvement with humans?

Dark Wielders / The Barrens theory

What if the venin are regenerating the Barrens By channeling in Navarre / Poromiel?

This would explain their motivations a bit better—just sucking up all that power from city walls, huge swaths of land, etc doesn’t otherwise make a lot of sense for any reason other than just greed, and they would not need to be so organized about it.

It would also play into the theory of “the balance,” as we are always reminded. PLUS, we know that it’s sometimes possible to ~redistribute~ magic. Early in FW, Kaori explains that “Naolin’s signet was siphoning.” And that “He could absorb power from various sources, other dragons, other riders, and then use it or redistribute it.”

Might make things a bit more interesting and continue the trend of turning the heroes/villains upside down from book to book.

During the OS, could Imogen have…

Could Imogen have channeled by accident when Quinn died? I’d be so devastated if that happened, since she’s one of my fave characters, but the phrasing of that scene is sketchy to me??

A scream that “shreds her soul” sounds an awful lot like the soul shredding when someone turns venin. Time stopping and the bricks leaching of color also sounds like channeling, and if that’s what was happening, then Garrick’s reaction takes on a whole different meaning…it wasn’t just grief and sympathy and misery for Imogen losing Quinn, it was another huge and devastating loss for him to see another friend turn venin. And the crouch might have been for his own protection, not knowing whether she’d be a danger to him?

I know that Garrick later says a dozen venin have “their hands on the city walls” trying to drain everything, but that doesn’t necessarily get them close enough to have been the ones draining the staircase in Imogen’s room—plus, although the phrasing is confusing, the stain seems to be spreading both up the staircase and down it (“each one higher than the last” and “in the bend beneath us”).

Imogen noooooo 😩 [and sorry to crush everyone’s hearts by making you read this scene again]

EDITED TO ADD: it also seems significant to me that Imogen is looking down for the whole last chapter, and the very last thing that happens is that she raises her eyes to finally meet Violet’s…what a seamless segue it would be to start book four with something about how her eyes have red rims… :(
