Medical Review Program

Hey I’m curious if anyone has experience with the Medical Review Program in North Carolina. I was getting the info on my Drivers License updated and was asked if I have either substance use disorder or mental health issues. I have both and answered this honestly, though I wish I’d asked if I could decline to answer, because the situation has a lot of nuance. I’ve never had a DUI, take my meds as prescribed, am in regular contact with my doctor and other medical professionals who have never expressed a concern about safely operating a vehicle, and I don’t drink alcohol or take any illicit substances or anything else that could otherwise affect my ability to safely drive.

I’m trying to understand if answering these questions honestly is going to require that I go through a medical review. Assuming that’s the case, I’m wondering if there is anything I should do to prepare, especially regarding paperwork (ie preemptively signing ROIs with doctors or gathering documents etc). If anyone has gone through this before, I’d appreciate your insight. Thanks in advance!

Asked if I have MH and/or SUD when updating my license.

Hey y’all,

I updated the information on my license (REAL ID) recently and was asked if I have any mental health issues or substance use disorders. I answered honestly, that I have both and that substance use disorder is in remission (I was not told if I had the option to decline to answer). Apparently, there is a “Medical Review Program” that lists psychiatric disorders and substance use disorders as grounds for a medical review. I can’t find any information on the specific psychiatric disorders that would cause an issue and I’ve never had a DUI. I’m waiting for my updated physical license to come in the mail. Is there any reason to be concerned about my license being suspended, because of this?

I’m hoping to collect any documentation that might be needed ahead of time so I can have that ready to submit if asked. Does anyone have experience with this that could help me understand what documents I might need to provide?
