Listening to western music
So (F) here when I was little my older brother only listened to English music when I was near him. He only did it cause sometimes I questioned him about the meaning behind the song. I mean you really can't explain love & breakup for an elementary schooler so he just played English ones. due to that I only listened to English music when I was growing up(Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande, Taylor swift, weekend ect.) And I didn't have any problem with that.
But when I was in grade 8 few of my friends were singing when the teachers weren't in the classroom and they figured out I only listened to English music(cause I didn't knew a single song they sang). With that I was called trying to be Posh & ect.
Then I tried to listen to some of Sinhala songs (I didn't want to be called 'oya posh ne English sindu witharane danne') but it didn't really go very well. The songs from 2000-2019 were absolute bangers I really liked them BUT after that a lot of 'trendy' songs were kinda not my taste in my opinion. I just couldn't bring myself to listen to SOME of those cringy breakup songs. Now I do have A LOT of Sinhala ones saved and I DO frequently listen to sinhala ones.
I just couldn't understand the fact that listening to 'English' music considered trying to be Posh ect. I've NEVER said 'sinhala ewa ahala wedak nene' or anything. I always respected my mother tongue. It's just that I connect more with English ones because those were the ones I heard since I was a child.(But the sinhala ones are taking the charge these days) And there's a lot of genres out there compared to here. You don't really have the same type of genre being used by every artist repeatedly over and over.
And some people even moked me for knowing English when they couldn't even score 70 while going to tuition classes(I never went for one)
Has anyone experienced this besides me? And am I the problem here for listening to English ones when I was a little kid?
