Wealth System Homebrew

I wanted to create a homebrew system for wealth that is still exciting for players, but is not reliant on counting gold, and abstracts that part away more than then current system does. Here is what I've come up with, taking inspiration from some other TTRPGs:

Wealth Track

Each character has a "Wealth" track. At character creation, you start at 2 (to match the 1 handful from the core rules):

  • 1: sleeping rough, no possessions
  • 2: room and board, basic gear
  • 3: a home, reliable supplies
  • 4: servants, fine gear
  • 5: estates, retainers
  • 6: you simply have it, whatever it is

Purchasing items

  • Each item has an equivalent Wealth Requirement. If you are purchasing an item below your wealth, you can simply purchase it.

  • If you are trying to purchase at or above your Wealth, roll a Wealth Roll (12).

    • If a Success with Fear would bring you below 1 Wealth, you cannot attempt the purchase.
    • On a Critical, you acquire the item and get something extra as a good deal
    • On a Success with Hope, you acquire the item
    • On a Success with Fear, you acquire the item, but your wealth goes down by the difference between your current Wealth and the Wealth Requirement
    • On a Failure with Hope, you don't acquire the item.
    • On a Failure with Fear, you don't acquire the item, and in trying to purchase it you end up losing 1 Wealth during bartering and negotiation.

Wealth Rolls

A Wealth Roll is a duality roll where you count the difference between your Wealth, and the Wealth Requirement, and subtract that many d6s from the roll.

  • For instance, if your Wealth is 3 and you are trying to purchase something with a Wealth Requirement of 4, you'd roll Duality - 1d6. The result is your Wealth Roll.

Suggested Wealth Requirements:

Purchase Wealth Requirement
Meal at an inn 2
Sleeping at an inn 2
Luxury inn room 3
Carriage ride 3
Mount (horse, mule, etc) 3
Specialized tools 3
Fine Clothing 4
Luxury Clothing 5
Basic Consumables 3
Special Consumables 4
Rare Consumables 5
Tier 1 Equipment 2
Tier 2 Equipment 3
Tier 3 Equipment 4
Tier 4 Equipment 5

Acquiring Wealth:

  • Once per Tier, you may choose to increase your Wealth by one as an alternate level up option.
  • Acquiring possessions in game contributes to wealth. Follow the fiction. For instance:
    • A character who has any meaningful coin should be at Wealth 2 or higher. Wealth 1 represents true destitution.
    • If the players loot a dragon's hoard, they might immediately be at Wealth 4 or 5
  • Small rewards rarely move the track, focus on more meaningful rewards than gold. A significant payout might raise it by 1 if the character is at a lower tier than the reward implies. Massive scores can jump multiple tiers.
