Critical updates for WhatsApp users in the UAE

**Banking Ban**: Effective May 1, the UAE Central Bank has prohibited financial institutions from using WhatsApp for customer services. Banks can no longer use the app to share customer data, confirm transactions, or send OTPs/passwords. Customers are advised to use official banking apps, websites, or call centers instead.

**Private Chat Rules**: Lawyers emphasize that private chats and groups are subject to UAE cybercrime laws. Forwarding unverified content, sharing images without consent, or harming reputations can lead to heavy fines (Dh250,000 to Dh500,000) or imprisonment. Group admins may also be held liable for unlawful content if they fail to remove it promptly.

**New Web Calling Support**: WhatsApp is rolling out native voice and video calling for WhatsApp Web. While this adds convenience, its availability in the UAE remains subject to approval by the Telecommunications and Digital Government Regulatory Authority (TDRA).

**Court Evidence:** Dubai’s highest court has ruled that WhatsApp messages can be used as evidence in legal disputes, provided their authenticity is forensically verified.
